Commentary: Envisioning water supply sustainability
In the midst of a 15-year drought and counting, most Arizonans recognize that the state faces water shortages. In specific localities these shortages exist now. For most of the populous portions of the state severe shortages are not projected to occur for several decades.

Karina Velasco paid her way through college by cleaning office buildings in downtown Washington for five hours every evening. She did her schoolwork after getting home at midnight, and is on track to receive her degree in social work next spring.

Commentary: Yavapai College continues to under-serve the Verde Valley
Occasionally, a skeptic appears in this newspaper who questions the view that the Verde Valley is being underserved by Yavapai College. To this doubting Thomas, I say: "Just look at the facts." If you do, you will find an unmistakable 45-year pattern of underservice. In fact, since the beginning of the County Community College system in the late 1960s, the goal has been to build a first-class community college in the Prescott area while simultaneously underserving the Verde Valley.

Commentary: 'Don't Worry Be Happy' - Really?
By now most of us have come to the conclusion that after 15 years of drought and decades of population expansion the Western United States is experiencing water supply problems that will not be overcome without changing how our water resources are managed. The answers to our current and future water resource issues can only be found by seeking solutions through cooperation and recognition that our economic viability is at risk.

As the Yavapai County Assessor since 2009, I'm not used to making headlines. I'm not much of a "politician" and I'm certainly not used to taking on powerful political interests or armies of lawyers. You may have noticed some headlines in the past few days about the Assessor's Office being sued by a powerful group of ranchers and the Cattle Growers lobby. Because that case has attracted a lot of attention, I feel compelled to set the record straight.

Commentary: Southwest Water Needs -- Take action on water future while we have the chance
There is some good news concerning water issues in the Southwest. The Natural Resources Conservation Services has indicated that snowmelt in the 4 upper basin states of the Colorado River Basin will help Lake Powell rise about 40 feet over the next few months. The result means that Lake Powell's water level will be within 26 feet of its 50 year average.

Commentary: What if Obama disobeys law on another GITMO release?
We've all heard that the law requires the administration to give Congress 30 days notice before releasing prisoners from the U.S. terrorist detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba -- a provision the White House willfully ignored in the recent release of five Taliban commandos in exchange for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.

But the law -- specifically the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2014 -- requires much more than that. Congress did not intend for the president to give lawmakers a simple heads-up. Instead, the House and Senate ordered that any such 30-day notification must include:
