Letter: Cartoon in bad taste, inflammatory text and factually incorrect

The Verde Independent recently chose to cast a partisan light on the AZ Senate Bill 1062 by the inclusion of a political cartoon steeped in bad taste, inflammatory text and factually incorrect (Friday, February 28, 2014. P. 4).

The cartoon shows a GOP elephant in a storefront with a sign attached, stating: "We reserve the right to discriminate against Gays, Blacks, Latinos, Women, The Poor, etc." I'm surprised that they didn't mention Little People, the Loch Ness Monster and the Abominable Snowman.

The timing for this was perfect. Not only had Governor Brewer vetoed the bill, but several of the proponents had changed their positions. What had been intended as freedom of religion legislation had also been interpreted as a hindrance to increased business activity.

Of course, the NFL and Super Bowl Committee weighed in on Arizona social policy with threats of withdrawing the Super Bowl from Glendale in 2016.

All of this occurred the week that the Democrats and Joe Biden declared that in the approaching elections they would "attack" rather than defend their broken policies such as Obamacare. The Independent was a willing participant in this approach.

Don't sit waiting for a cartoon about Bill DiBlasio, the mayor of New York City, evicting charter schools from existing school buildings in the City.

That couldn't possibly be discrimination against the poor children who are finally obtaining a good education.

And, he's an old white guy!

Bill Dwyer

Isn't it, "If you can't take the kettle, get out of the heat?"

Or, is it, "The kitchen calling the pot black?"

I am bound and determined to be cliché free, I promise.

I didn't find that cartoon applicable to any Republicans I know, but if you can't take the heat, get out of the kettle. Right?

If you have ever been married and had a 'discussion' with your wife about something she holds dear, you probably, like most husbands, have heard this retort: "You just can't get it, can you?"

Sir, that is a good pace to start with you regarding your letter.

Of course, republican't legislation restricting government financial aid for birth control and family planning, has nothing to do with keeping women in their proper republican't place in life: barefoot and pregnant.

And, Red state movements to change voting locations and times for minority districts have nothing to do with limiting minority turnouts and making it harder for blacks, Mexican and the elderly to cast votes.

And, I am sure you saw the Fox News Business commentator's interview the other evening in which, while answering a question about the poor not being able to afford Healthcare in the US, the Fox guy stated, "Well, they can just stop being poor!"

Mr. Dwyer, you, and the vast majority of the right-wing nuts whose words, beliefs and actions create, in reasonable men, the ridicule, scorn and the above cartoon's message, just can't get it, can you?

Of course, such willful ignorance is only in your best, very narrow right-wing interests.

Poor little GOPers! Bill whines that the cartoon is inaccurate but fails to cite any evidence regarding why it is anything but a fine example of political fair comment. There is an odd, disconnected statement about charter schools. Huh? Whatever. I say truth hurts and you got caught being narrow-minded bigots. Nice job AZ legislators. Now many a fine business will run, not walk away from this state, whose reputation is now permanently damaged. Way to go GOP.
