Letter: Parents should be licensed


Regarding all the blame being cast about over some 6000 cases of child abuse that have been neglected or ignored:

I say license parents, not guns. CPS isn't the problem, bad parents are. Guns aren't the problem, criminals are.

I never saw an amendment in the Constitution that says: "The right of the people, to bear and raise children, in or out of wedlock, regardless of ability, financial means, or mental health, shall not be infringed."

If we required licenses for parents to have children, I would suggest that our gang problems, crime problems and violence problems would mostly disappear, and CPS wouldn't be overburdened in about 12-15 years.

The whole point of the Eugenic pseudo-scientific theories (which this letter is a prime example of) is that they are to be applied wholesale, by some more sweeping and generalizing money power than the individual husband or wife or household. Eugenics asserts that all men must be so stupid that they cannot manage their own affairs and also so clever that they can manage each other's.

I believe that many difficulties with parenting could be solved through true education starting in middle school. Teach sex education classes starting in middle school, and continue through high school. Make child development classes and parenting classes mandatory in 8th grade and up. Another class that should be mandatory is a general finance class that teaches budgeting, home finance, and the cost of raising a child. Insurance companies and clinics provide free contraception, the morning after pill available over the counter. Kids are having babies when they don't even know how to care for themselves. I truly believe that if we put these above mentioned systems in place, you would see the teenage pregnancy rate fall. And to Frank Lee, why not teach boys to say no too? The last time that I checked, it took two people to make a baby.

You need a license to catch a fish but there are no requirements for procreating. This has never made a lot of sense to me.

19 degrees this morning and I saw kids waiting for a school bus with no coats. I bet they'd had no breakfast, either.

The right wingers are advocating the same discredited policies their predecessors were repudiated for. Eugenics will never be acceptable in our society, nor will your brand of fascism and enslavement of the middle-class.

Your days of neutering undesirables (minorities, jews, Catholics, people not of your political persuasion) are long gone.

The Bill of Rights restricted government from infringing specific rights that were regularly infringed by tyrannical despots. As I recall, the right to bear children wasn't one of them.

Amendment IX:
The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.

Amendment X:
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

This sounds good on paper, but who would set the standards for good parenting?

And doesn't the State already license marriage? What good has that done relative to the number of child abuse complaints from people who may or may not know true abuse when they see it?

I'd be afraid child-bearing licences would simply be used to protect the status quo and collect fees from people who want to have children. Exactly as state-issued marriage licences are today.

I agree, Doug. They'll let anyone have a child these days.

I assume you are not serious. If you have a child withourt government approval then what? We may look to China for guidance. During their one child policy, if a woman was pregnant with a second baby, fellow citizens were incented to report her and she was forced to abort, or pay a large fine. (Of course, the wealthy just pay the fine.)

We could educate teens about birth control and make the morning after pill aviailable over the counter, but I'm sure that would upset many conservatives. Maybe we could convince girls to "just say NO!"

This letter writer may sound facetious, but there is truth to the need for licensing parents. Of course, licensing should follow a reasonable period of appropriate book and hands-on training. I am fairly certain that I did not help my child develop certain good mental processes that would assist him in succeeding at life, and I'm just as certain that I was not assisted in the same mental process development by my own parents. We all need to learn to be good parents, from somebody who already is that good parent. Some are just a little further on in their education than I am.
