Letter: Citizen Police Academy was a great experience

Thank you, Chief Fanning and Sergeant Savage. My wife and I had the opportunity to attend and complete the Cottonwood Citizen Police Academy, class of 2013. Mary and I want to thank both of you as well as all of the officers that participated in the Cottonwood Citizen Police Academy. We found it to be extremely informative and enjoyable

We found all of the participating officers to be very knowledgeable about their area of expertise and willing to share their knowledge with us as well as answer our questions no matter how many we asked.

Being given the opportunity to meet and listen to the officers concerning the various departments within the Police Department was very educational. The officers all show their commitment to their service as well as to the community.

The Department/Community programs, Officer requirement/selection process and Patrol Procedures show the care that is given in selecting highest quality and caring officers. The Citizen Academy showed us all of the areas of enforcement that the Police are responsible for.

Domestic Violence, Criminal Investigations, Responsible use of Force, the K9 program, Motor programs, Accident Investigations, S.W.A.T. Operations and Negotiations, Dispatch, Animal Control, Terrorism, as well as the Narcotic Investigation further our respect for the law enforcement in general but in particular the Cottonwood Police Department.

The citizens of Cottonwood have a Police Department that they can be very proud of and feel secure in the knowledge that they are protected. We feel that the Police Officers whether they are State, County of City should be given the same respect as the men and women that serve in our military. The military is the first line of defense against the growing threats against our country and the Police Officers are the first line of defense from the growing criminal/drug element that we as citizens face. When you have the opportunity to meet either a Military Soldier or a Police Officer please take the time to greet them and thank them for their service.

Also the Academy will hopefully be offering the class many times in the future and we cannot recommend strongly enough that concerned citizens take part in this wonderful program. We are sure that you as citizens of Cottonwood will enjoy it as much as we have.

Mary and Ray Durgan
