Letter: Warnings from a Colorado sheriff

Editor:

Sheriff Terry Maketa of El Paso County, Colo., wrote a letter to his fellow Americans, you and me, regarding the attack on our Constitution.

He writes, "In the blink of an eye, the law-abiding citizens of Colorado have lost their Second Amendment Rights.

"The Colorado legislature pushed through several unconstitutional gun control measures that were quietly signed into law by our Governor."

Sheriff Maketa says he knew that the anti-gun legislation didn't come from the people of Colorado--it came from Washington D.C. (President Obama and V.P. Joe Biden) and from N.Y. (Mayor Bloomberg).

He says that when he took the oath to become sheriff, he swore to uphold the U.S. Constitution -- not to do the bidding of politicians in N.Y. and Washington, D.C.

Sheriff Maketa says he and 50 other Colorado sheriffs have decided that they won't be a part of the attack on your Constitutional Right to bear arms.

Speaking about the gun haters and slick politicians, Sheriff Maketa continues, "They're having a hard time getting their sham gun control legislation passed on a national level, so now ... [they're] concentrating ... on getting guns banned in individual states--in your state if they can.

"Even if you are not a gun owner, what's to stop them from taking more of your rights once they've taken this one?"

Sheriff Maketa warns us that the battle to confiscate guns in every state is just beginning.

I came across this article in Forbes from last January when the gun control debate was front and center in the news. Forbes Magazine, imagine that. Please copy and paste this link into your browser. It is very much on topic.

Wow!

M J has managed to station his own fear and paranoia into an analogy likening his self-proclaimed victimization into the horrors suffered by those shipped off to concentration camps during the war.

A tad melodramatic, even for M J.

MJ, methinks you are listening to a little too much Alex Jones. Do you honestly see warning signs leading up to concentration camps? Honestly? I will say that was a pretty well written piece of fiction. I tried to find the source and could not. I'm just curious where you copied it. Hard to believe, based on all your earlier comments, that you wrote it from scratch.

In 1971 I actually went to Auschwitz. It is a museum now with horrific displays. A powerful reminder of the very worst humans can do to fellow humans. I've seen the infamous wrought iron gate which proclaims Arbeit Macht Frei.
I've stared into the entrances of the gas chambers, seen the ovens and walked on a bridge over pits filled with the ashes of those who were murdered. It's not a joke, it's not something to be referenced lightly.

I also have letters written and sent from Hamburg Germany by my uncle who was in the Merchant Marine in 1938 and 1939. He describes the atmosphere of giddy delight among the Nazis after Kristallnacht. He was horrified. He left Germany 2 days before the invasion of Poland. He died in 1944 when his ship, the USS Monaghan went down in the Pacific.

There is nothing going on in America in 2013 that even remotely resembles Nazi Germany in 1939. Wait, I take that back. The ultra right wing faction of the Tea Party, the Oath Keepers, the white supremacists, the Molon Labe crowd and the followers of Asatru are present right here in the Verde Valley. Those guys scare me, those guys should scare you too.

@ mj

I guess we'll have to title yours, "EmmyJay in Wonderland"

Your ending paragraph wasn't exactly clear. How did the T-Party Nazis get all those citizens to buy Amtrack tickets? Was it a trick played on the public by Mittens? You know, buy the train service then sell tickets and when the passengers show up to board their luxury coaches they find out the Pullman cars have been sold and now have been replaced by cattlecars made in China? Oh, I get it! Mittens took out loans to buy new, state of the art passenger coaches but instead paid out millions in bonuses to himself and his henchmen and then filed for bankruptcy.

It's all so clear!!!!

A liberal’s vision of hope and change

The boxcar stank from all the people crammed in it. It was hot and cries of water could be heard. Mile after mile the train rattled on.
“Bob,” said the man in a torn and faded red plaid shirt, holding his hand out.
“Bill,” said the man squashed next to Bob. He shook Bob’s hand.
“I was a Tea Party member in Texas I went into hiding after the Government declared us unpersons. My wife couldn’t take it anymore and took the Government loyalty oath and gave her DNA sample….. I haven’t seen her since,” Bob said, looking at the floor.
“Yeah, that stinks," Bill said, “I’m from Arizona. Occupy Wall Street thugs wearing bandit masks raided our Tea Party group while several IRS agents stood by grinning. A lot of people got hurt. People scattered in terror. I don’t know what happened to all of them. Nothing good I think… Where do you think we’re headed?”
“I don’t know,” Bob answered.

Both men fell silent, and the train kept rolling. It was hard to breathe with so many people in such a small space, and talking took effort. Hours passed.
The sun was starting to set when the train came to a jerking halt. “Can you see anything Bob,” asked Bill. Bob had his face smashed up to a crack in the siding of the boxcar. ”Yeah,” Bob said, “there’s a sign all lit up. The sign says, ‘Work will set you free’.”
The two men looked at each other in alarm when they heard barking dogs.

@ Gary Dean

What rights have you lost since President Obama took office?

In fact, what rights have you ever lost since you were born?

Sorry you walk around AFRAID of losing your rights, but there's nothing I can do about that.

Fear makes children of men...thanks for the demo.

Are these the people who like to call themselves The Oath Keepers? Law enforcement, first responders, active duty military, retired military, the very people who we all count on protect and serve. These once honorable people are now using ideology to go rogue. The very oath they claim to be keeping is being rent by their distorted interpretation of our Constitution.

In the past, those who ignored their duty, ignored orders, ignored and invalidated laws on their own volition might have been brought up on charges of dereliction of duty. Serious stuff. So now right wing attitudes applaud these oath breakers and hold them up as an example fo the cause.

Under the guise of defending The Constitution, the 2nd Ammendment in particular, they are nullifying the very rule of law set down 224 years ago. Without any authority but their own self righteousness as a guide. The result will be, predictably, anarchy. Or just as bad, fascism.

To quote Sinclair Lewis and paraphrase George Carlin and add a little something by a blogger for Daily Kos called srfRantz:
“When Fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and waving a Bible.”
and shouting Molon Labe!

I have written before about how very frightening this kind of rhetoric is to me. I fear the ultra nationalist, close minded and cult like adherence to distorted principles that led people like Timothy McVeigh to bomb the Federal Building in Oklahoma City.

I can say this stuff as a proud American Citizen, a Veteran of the United States Army, and an Eagle Scout.

Keep in mind that the liberal sheeple who post here are the same group of thugs who think that sending a gestapo like wing of the government (IRS) to intimidate fellow citizens, just because they disagree with them, is ok.....

more than ok ......

I was not born until after WWll. But having studied history in school, many years ago now, It is my understanding why the war was fought, To put down the evil persecution of the people by the likes of Hitler, Mussolini and Stalin. Now WE, the people of the United States of America, are faced with the likes of Obama and his group that are slowly but surely taking away our rights. So, do you people, who are calling the Sheriff that has gumption to stand up for whats right, want to live where you have to have permission to go to the store? Because thats what I see coming, unless we stand together for what rights we have left.

I could ask the same about at least 50% of the laws Arizona legislators pass. So could you, although probably not the same 50%.

I won't, though, because I know the answer: They increase the legislators' power or security, and a majority of voters aren't paying attention.

Article comment by: Maketa is just another loudmouth

wannabe Joe Arpaio with a high school diploma and a bunch of right wing nuts like you, Arden, goose-stepping to his pap.

I imagine his oath of office would require him to uphold the laws of Colorado as well as the Constitution, and, I also imagine the legislative branch of the Colorado government has the authority to pass laws.

Not Maketa.

Tell me, Arden, where in your fantasy world does a sheriff get either the the knowledge or the authority to be the final arbiter as to the meaning the Constitution?

Law enforcement needs to stop confusing themselves with 'being the law' and shut up and do their stated job: 'enforce the law.'

Maketa should be fired for dereliction of duty.

People like Maketa and Arpaio are, in the long run, dangerous.

Sheriff Marketa is all about putting loaded guns into schools, something very few police officials and even fewer educators want.

Thank goodness for their common sense or lunatic ideas like those espoused by Mr. Marketa might actually get some traction.

Call Cottonwood Police Chief Jody Fanning and ask him if he thinks arming school staff is a good idea.

Go ahead...call him.

OH NOES, the SCARY SLIPPERY SLOPE!!!

If the people of Colorado didn't want these new laws, why did their legislature pass them?
