Letter: Excellent job on USGS presentation at Camp Verde

Editor:

The USGS did a fine job of presenting the negative effects on the Verde River of our water use since 1910 and the future effects if we continue to use it as we have.

The questions following this informative presentation reflected a wide variety of concerns and issues. As Tom O’Halleran of the Verde River Basin Partnership expressed it, the Verde River water issues affect everyone in the Verde River Basin and it is critical that all parties work together to develop effective, practical answers now to ensure the long-term health of the river.

We must develop solutions soon as a community or the river will confront us with drastic problems in the future.

This thought came to me as I attended the presentation:
Science, complicated as it is, is by no means as complicated as the human systems of policy and politics.

Too bad there isn't any decent local reporting on the presentation. AZcentral covered it in detail. Go figure.

Article comment by: The Thursday Water Hearing... More Political Than Factual.

The USGS...did not present a fine scientific
presentation.

The only fact they worked with was the water
flow readings from three meters in Yavapai
county...and no other factual info.

The scientist were unable to say how much
water is located in the Verde Valley...Hence
our citizens and officials from state, county and
local can not make any real decision from the
minmal to no useful info suppllied at the
Thursday "public dog and pony show"...

The most useful info came from some of the
political leaders...who indicated we should be
looking at water management/conservation...
or bottom line: "waste not want not"....
