Now don’t anyone go and pooh-pooh the idea of Sand Trout. Having grown up here in AZ I have been aware of Sand Trout all of my life. Mostly I remember the ones in the Hassayampa River. Judging by the bait that was called for by Ms. Grieshaber (Letter: Time to welcome infamous Sand Trout to Verde River? March 3, 2013), I guess all of the really big ones got fished out.
Back when I was a young lad we had to use a sheep or a goat or large dog and some people even used their older children for bait. Usual size of the Sand Trout caught ran about 8 ft and 250 lbs.
If jerked one of those old time Sand Trout would give most ranchers enough fish jerky to last most all winter.
Yeah, it’s a shame that the Sand Trout fishermen have been degraded to using 2X4s and tin cans as lures.
Live bait always worked so much better.
I remember one good ol’ boy used his horse and caught four fish at once. One on each leg! Yeppers! That was one tough hombre to fight four of them fish to a stand still all at one time: And that reminds me of another story but I think I had better save it for another time.
