Letter: Was election for president or an emperor?

Editor:

A recent Rasmussen poll found that 7 of 10 Americans want our government to reduce spending - not slow it down - reduce.  Some 62 percent would prefer across -the-board cuts. They understand the consequences of our unsustainable spending binge. However, only a little more than 40 percent believe it will happen - and with good reason. Democrat leadership, including President Obama, Senate Majority Leader Reid and Nancy Pelosi all claim there is no spending problem. I can't attest to the intelligence of Reid or Pelosi.

Their public pronouncements do not inspire confidence, both have become millionaires in public office - Reid has been implicated in shady land deals, Pelosi the moving force behind legislation that has enhanced both her and her husband's wealth. But the president is known to be an intelligent man.

So, he must understand what nearly every economist in the country understands - that our country is headed for financial Armageddon.  But, he has made it plain that he does not intend to slow down the spending. That means he either has no common sense to go with his intelligence, or he is so ideologically rigid that he doesn't care.

Just as during his re-election campaign, during which he avoided debating the economic condition by making his campaign about everything but the economy, Mr. Obama is using the same tactic in the coming fight over raising the debt ceiling.

He, and a complicit, fawning media, wants us to believe it's about paying our debts. It is not. The debt ceiling debate is essentially about borrowing. Without an increase in the ceiling there can be no borrowing for greater spending.

Mr. Obama and his cohorts say that, without a higher ceiling (he wants it to be unlimited) the country will default on its debt. Actually, there is enough revenue coming into government coffers monthly to cover 60 percent of current spending.

The argument is about the 40 percent that we are borrowing. Those revenues must be spent, first, to cover the interest payments on the national debt - about $200 billion a year right now - and government owed pensions.

That is required by the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution (a document Liberals find to be very inconvenient). The rest would be required to cover "essential "government services. Other debt would have to be delayed or shuffled as revenue came in, but that does not mean that unfilled contracts could not be cancelled and non-essential personnel furloughed.

Mr. Obama also claims that there is no way spending can be cut without damaging the economy or reducing services. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) just put the lie to that claim, releasing a report detailing $4.6 trillion in optional cuts that will not hurt either the economy or services.

A small sample (ten year savings): raise the earliest eligibility age for Social Security ($142 billion), limit highway funding to expected highway revenues ($86 billion), adopt a voucher plan for federal employees health benefits program ($73 billion), limit medical malpractice lawsuits ($64 billion), eliminate intercity rail subsidies ($30 billion).

And the list goes on, ready for Congress to simply lift the suggestions from the report pages and transfer them to a bill. The CBO suggests that just cutting funding for all agencies, other than defense, by a mere one percent would save $932 billion over 10 years. I would venture to say that there is a minimum of 10 percent waste and fraud in any given government agency - the Education Department, alone, has dozens of programs that are duplicates.

If a program fails, it isn't shut down; a new one is begun. CBO goes on to suggest that a 1 percent reduction in just the growth in defense spending would save $862 billion over 10 years.

So, the president could very easily satisfy Republican demands for spending cuts in exchange for a higher debt ceiling. But since his re-election, Mr. Obama has become even more confrontational, more inflexible and, yes, more arrogant in his dealings with his opposition.

He has said that he has no intention of even negotiating with the House of Representatives - where all revenue bills must originate - on the issue of raising the debt ceiling. In regard to the election he says "I won, you lost." It has apparently not fazed him that the voters returned the Republicans to the majority in the House. Perhaps he believes the election was not for president but for emperor.

"President Obama is simply done negotiating against himself." What a stupid joke statement you made, the sad and sorry part is that you actually believe it ...... president barry's presidency can be summed up by his program ..... "cash for clunkers" .....

President Obama is simply done negotiating against himself. He has stopped trying to work with the Teapublican Congress because it cannot be reasoned with. Evidence of the President's repeated attempts to compromise with the right wing for the first four years of his presidency is a matter of record. We need more stimulus, not less. You claim the economy is headed for Armageddon? That's just silly. Increasing foreign trade every month for the last year, increasing manufacturing, increasing employment, increasing energy production, low inflation. Lagging wages, despite billions in cash on hand, is the problem. It is the corporations, sitting on huge cash assets that are refusing to hire more employees and increase wages. Why? Because of the economic uncertainty caused by obstructionist, right wing zealots who value principles more than people. You Teabaggers haven't had a single new idea in 30 years. Y'all need to get out of the way and let the President do his job.

Even though I am paying higher prices for fuel, energy and groceries… all attributed to Obama’s lack of a domestic energy policy, I refuse to give him the power of depressing me. That is a choice we all make, if we choose to play his game.

Obama admits that his carbon tax ideology that he is implementing via the EPA will cause energy costs to skyrocket. Furthermore he wants gas prices up around $6.00 a gallon to force a switch to his green energy crony capitalism program.

There are many things that Obama’s policies are indirectly or directly affecting… only those ‘sheeple’ who do not want to see, refuse to acknowledge the correlation.

@ Working the system

I once worked on a series of social services training films, based on actual case files. One of the sections gave case workers alternative approaches for handling family networks like the one you posted. Although I've never seen any quite that extreme, "Working the system" does exist nationwide. Most case workers do everything they can to eliminate it, not so much to save taxpayer money as to help people caught in these poverty-level fraud rings get out of them.

However, these people were roundly exposed in the 1990's. The Clinton-Gingrich team's Welfare to Work program has worked as well as I've ever seen a federal social program work. In both the Clinton and Bush Administrations, it had low side-effects and high returns--both socially and economically.

So in 2013, I suggest we the tax-paying people beat up on some other group of welfare recipients: the many-generational corporate subsidy scammers, the new-era alternative energy bunco artists, the government contract leaches, the health insurance hustlers, etcetera. Eliminating just the fraudulent spending could save the Obama Administration 3 or 4 times what Clinton and Bush saved.

Well Jasmine, you do know that the president has no authority to set prices of fuel, groceries, insurance or healthcare. Those industries are supposed to be private enterprise. I can only imagine the outrage if any president were to try to intervene. Right?

And, are you seriously telling us that you have been kept in a state of depression, on purpose, by Barack Obama? Read that back out loud and listen to how that sounds. I'm sure it didn't come out the way you meant. No one could honestly believe something so absurd.

@ Randy Lowe, You completely misquoted Tocqueville. But here's one of his actual quotes which shines a light on your fascist views

“The surface of American society is covered with a layer of democratic paint, but from time to time one can see the old aristocratic colours breaking through.” - Tocqueville

Bill Bassett,
Your point is taken about the hyperbole…however there is things that truly have affected almost all of us.

I suggest you look at the cost of fuel for our vehicles, energy costs ,and healthcare/ Obamacare that keep going up and the cost of groceries as a result of the aforementioned.

A large part of the current problem is peoples failure to think critically… milk does not come from the store!

Furthermore the apathy generated by people who are uninformed is pounced upon by the media and Obama. A little bit more money here and there goes a long way at the end of the year… especially for businesses.

I believe that Obama wants to keep everyone in a state of depression, whereby he can be the ‘Father Figure’ and for those who oppose him he likes having them all roiled up.

A good percentage of the time it is just a distraction from the usurping of our liberties… at least the attempt.

We are a collective… everyone would do well to put some energy into what they truly want, not take the attitude of: it has not affected me yet.

To Gary LaMaster
You are correct about the "Franklin" quote. The actual quote was from Alexis de Tocqueville
It reads as follows.
“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years.”

We can only hope that the 'majority' will tip back the other way when the realization hits that this over-bloated government cannot be sustained.

Article comment by: So what, Jim, Rasmussen also predicted

... a Romney win.

Headline, Nov. 5, 2012: "Going Out on a Limb: Romney Beats Obama, Handily."

To make Rasmussen Polls even less credible, they predicted Ohio and Florida for Romney (among other incorrect vote predictions).

Take heart, Jim, in a backhanded compliment sort of way, they are less credible than you.

Re: Doris Rotolo
Hello
Your statement "It is not your money. Like all money once spent it is gone...not yours to worry about."
Could NOT be further from the truth.
ALL THE MONEY THE GOVERNMENT HAS COMES FROM YOU AND ME .... FROM TAXES! (I know ... I know ... some liberal is now scratching his/her head and sayin' ... but - but - but ... the money comes from the gubmint .... no ... sorry ... the gubmint prints the money.... its worth comes from us).
All the money the Federal Gubmint has comes from US - from taxes imposed on YOU, on your labor or purchases .... (Note to liberals - labor means work)
All the money the State Gubmint has comes from US - from taxes imposed on YOU, on your labor or purchases ... (Note to liberals - purchases means the stuff you buy)
All the money the Local Gubmint has comes from US - from taxes imposed on YOU, on your labor or purchases.
Of course I'm concerned how the money is spent ...... it came from you and me .... It is our money ... our money makes the gubmint work.
This is just one of the fundamental differences between us and liberals. Money doesn't come from a tree - YOU WORK FOR IT -
You exchange your labor for currency that you exchange for goods or services (Note to liberals - currency means money, goods means stuff you buy, like your slurppee at the circle K, and services means stuff you get done for you by other folks like say, a dentist) ....
You or the Gubmint just can't print paper and say its worth something .... our money isn't backed up by anything like gold or whatever .... it is ONLY backed up by the trust people put in it ... and if the people ... or other Gubmints have no faith in it ..... then it becomes worth less, or worse case - worthless .....
(I know I know ... some liberals eyes are glazing over and they are thinkin' .... hey..... ain't it time for Oprah!)

HaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHa
You sure got the Howlin' and squeeeeeeeing liberal horde all worked up now!!!!!!!!!
Listen to all that howling and squeeeeeling!!!!!!

Sayyyyyy ..... how does it feel, all you workin' suckers to be played!
Liberals ..... how ungrateful they are .... they don't say thank for all the money they steal ... oppsss ... I mean tax from all you folks that get up every mornin' and go to work ... nooooo .... they call you names like greedy and the like ... and tell you that you need to give MORE of your hard earned money to LAZY people to sit around and watch Jerry Springer ... or take lavish vacations in Hawaii or Spain ...
To understand why the liberal horde is squeeling so hard, keep in mind the 3 core values of a liberal ...
• envy
•resentment
•greed
if you have something that a liberal wants ... then they are goin' to take it .... not much difference from a corporate raider ..... is it?

I read these comments and I think...Good God I hope these people are not as dumb as they sound...and at least I hope it doesnt show.

It is embarrassing to think that this is 2013 and the world has evolved , but people seem to be stuck on brain dead.

This country has grown very fast in a few short years and it takes a lot of money to run a country this large. It makes no difference in peoples lives how much is spent. Not one of us will ever see one penny of saved money or suffer because of spent money. You only have to mind your own check book. In days where you were not informed of every detail of government you did as well as you will today if you settle down and stop talking crazy about what you can not control. It is not your money. Like all money once spent it is gone...not yours to worry about. Calling names and blaming is not going to change a thing. It just show the person you are,and no one really cares about your opinions. But it does tell who is nuts in the neighborhood. I can appreciate that part. May be we can color co -ordinate so we can have a fair shot at what to do about that part. Or have a list similar to the molester one so we can decide if we want to move or not.before you go postal. I cant wait until we have our first Hispanic Lesbian President with mixed race kids.
