Letter: Our democracy is on the auction block

Editor:

For the last months our airways have been full of Republican ideology, first through the numerous debates, and now through the endless primaries, many of which are meaningless because the various states violated the National Party’s election rules. For instance, yesterday the fine Republicans of Missouri went to the polls and cast their ballots. None of them counted; it was nothing more than an expensive straw poll.

What have we learned from the Republicans so far? Mitt Romney, the supposed leader of the pack, a man who has never experienced a day of financial want in his life, stated that he is not worried about the very poor because there are enough safety nets for them. He is not worried about the very rich because they are doing just fine, but he intends to give them an added tax break. As for the foreclosure problem we should just let the market hit bottom, then let the developers buy up the properties and turn them into rentals. Another one of his principles is my favorite “Corporations are people, my friend.”

Moving on we look at the candidate in second place who is Newt Gingrich, the former Speaker of the House, who was paid by Freddie Mac 1.6 million dollars as a historian. He must be some historian. You know Freddie, He’s the other half of Fannie Mae, between them they hold most of the bad mortgages written by all the big banks. Well, Newt came up with a great idea on how public schools could save a whole lot of money. He proposes that Congress rescind the Child Labor laws. Once Congress takes that action then the public schools should fire all the janitors and our kids would take over the janitorial services for the school. Of course once the child labor laws are gone just imagine the golden opportunities Newt and the Republicans could envision for our children and our grandchildren.

I agree with just one thing the Republicans are saying this election year. This is the most important election of our lifetime... Our democracy is on the auction block. It will either belong to all of us or it will be owned outright by the 1 percent. It is in our hands

Jackie Nudd

I just LOVE these people who THINK they did everything all by themselves. LOL

That paycheck you got from that SCHOOL came from the GOVERNMENT. (Which got its money from taxing people. Government doesn't create wealth.)

Your money was SAFE in the BANK because of the GOVERNMENT. (This is from the same person who chastises wall street and facist bankers who cohort with the same government "protecting" the money)

You got a public EDUCATION from the GOVERNMENT. (Which was again funded by taxes government doesn't create wealth it takes it. Of course, I am a huge advocate of Homeschooling and don't believe in the public school debacle)

You drove back and forth to work on ROADS built by the GOVERNMENT.(No, the roads were built by private enterprises working on contract from the government, who again, gets its money by taxing people, as in taking it from someone to give to another government doesn't create wealth it confiscates it)

You have been LIVING off all our TAX contributions YOUR entire life, you SOCIALIST. (Now now now...there is a difference which you skew. If he worked as an employee, then he earned it. If he sat at home and did nothing for it, then you have a case. Of course, he didn't do the latter...)

Somehow, I don't think YOU have enough money to be considered the 1%. Americans just WANT people like Mitt Romney who makes $20 million a year doing NOTHING to pay his FAIR share.
---------------------------------------------------
(Mitt Romney is retired. That is why he does "nothing". So now all retired people are worthless and do "nothing"?

Mitt Romney's wealth, which he'd earned by working (interesting, no?), was actually taxed twice. Oh yes....

He'd paid the 52% corporate tax on it when he first received it, now pays 15% capital gains tax each year. Kind of funny....he paid 67% of his income in taxes, keeps paying taxes without making more, and it still isn't enough for the socialists. Funny, sound like Warren Buffet who-had he actually paid his taxes- would have paid the same rate but skews the numbers to his advantage. You know, the liberal hero Mr. Buffet still owes this country a billion and a half dollars in back taxes...why aren't we complaining about him? Or Tax Cheat Timmy? )

Not a distribution of wealth . . . just COMMON sense. (Kind of sad since a lot of liberal VI readers seem to lack it, and spew BS like yours without being actually informed and have to rely on talking points.)

You SEE he did not make HIS money all by himself either . . . he used A LOT of CORPORATE WELFARE to get where he is.

Here we go again. Jackie Nudd puts forth very specific arguments against some of the GOP candidates, while every conservative writes generalities that cannot be measured. I've got my issues with Obama, and I'd love to see Ron Paul go up against him (or maybe WITH him as VP), but 23 straight months of job growth is not destroying this country. And if anyone reading this is making more than $250K per year (and may get taxed more) then I'm a monkey's uncle. So stop lying about how much you've saved and how Obama is going to take it all and give it to lazy welfare people.

Re NO MORE, I, like you have done the same and I'll be damned if obama and his croannies are going to pick my pockets and give it to those able bodied bums that are either to lazy or stupid to work.

Ms Nudd, It seems you don't remember 4 years ago when the samething happened with the Dcrats and I'm guessing you supported the "Change" which, by the way has done nothing but hurt this nation!

Oh yeah.

I want to spend another year watching my retirement nest egg evaporate. After nearly 50 years of work, I am now seen as the enemy of the State because I managed to save, scrimp and invest fairly well.

The Obama regime is hell bent on equalizing the distribution of wealth in America. So my hard work and sacrafice can be re-distributed to those less fortunate folks who just never got around to working or saving can enjoy the good life, on somebody elses dime. Come on Jackie, no one held a gun to the head of people buying those expensive houses. Greed prevails in the USA. One last thing. I performed janitorial work at my school in the 50's. Paid $1.20 per hour, and I was darn glad to do it. Saved every dime, and bought a car with it my second year of High School. You see, my folks were dirt poor, but we learned the value of hard work and saving as children. Those values went out the door with Jimmy Carter. I urge ALL of you to closely watch all of the candidates from every party, and choose the one who you feel wil do the least damage to our Nation. May GOD be with us all.

@ Highly Distorted Ideology:

Reading and rereading Jackie Nudd's essay I cannot find either ideology or distortions. The letter puts forth what is already known by recounting the actual publicized stands of the two candidates.

"Highly Distorted" is the one putting forth ideology, with not one fact to present. Of course this venue is called the "opinion" page so he/she has every right to complain. But we readers seem to want more than that, so we can become more enlightened by the writers. I am sorry "Highly" missed the the chance to get enlightened!

Go Jackie!

Correct. Our Supreme Court Judges have committed the ultrimate treason by allowing Cpacs. Our elections and elected are bought and paid for. This must be overturned immediately. Lobbyist must be removed from our buildings. Insider trading by congressman/elected must be stopped and those involved must be exposed and held accountable.

Article comment by: Highly distorted ideology

Ms. Nudd's perspective is highly distorted and skewed. Her comments demonstrate she has in fact a poor understanding of the issues, particularly with respect to Mr. Romney.

I could respond tit-for-tat to every one of her points, but I would instead just say this.

If you want more of the same kind of failed leadership, dismal economic performance, crushing unsustainable debt passed to future generations, job-killing deference to special interest groups, loopholes and exemptions given to favored businesses, plus the kind of gridlocked divisiveness we've experienced over the past 3 years, Obama is definitely your man.

His campaign demonstrates we can expect more of the same kind of far-left liberal ideology pushed on the nation. If you like class warfare and Chicago-style favortism, Mr. Obama is an excellent choice for the next 4 years.

But if you think we can do better, if you're not satisfied with the economy, if you feel like the country is headed in the wrong direction, isn't it time to give someone else a try?

Please think very carefully before casting your vote, and don't let yourself be swayed by smears and distorted ideology.
