Letter: GOP priorities based on view of morality

Editor:

Reading about the most recent bills before our state legislature makes me wonder what is it about morality that makes the Republicans think they can impose theirs on everyone else? I’m thinking in particular about putting Bible studies in the middle and high school curriculum, telling women what they can and cannot do with their bodies, and putting everything in the way of pain ridden Arizonans getting their medical marijuana.

How is it that it’s the Republicans who put forth these bills, and the Democrats that are rejecting them? Are we to assume the Republicans are more moral than the Democrats? Isn’t that an over-the-top, superiority complex? And what about Republicans always talking about wanting less government.

Shouldn’t less government mean not interfering with people’s personal and life decisions? Shouldn’t the Bible be taught at home and in the churches? Shouldn’t a woman decide when and whether she should have a baby? And now that the voters expressed their wish to legalize marijuana for medical purposes, shouldn’t college students be allowed to carry their pain killer on campus?

Tell me, doesn’t it seem like the Democrats are for individual freedom and the Republicans are for restricting it?

Lee Cali

John,

How many TIMES do I have to tell you? Libertarianism is a THEORY . . .
It has NEVER been implemented.

So why don't you take you TIME MACHINE and head back to where ever you came from. lol

Not surprising that an extreme liberal like Ms. Cali writes this. When you start so far from the left, there's little room to see commonality or middle ground.

Now consider the flip side. Many Republicans think it's the Democrats who arrogantly think their views of morality are superior and seek to impose them on society. And make everyone else pay for it.

Case in point: Obamacare.

In the latest example of this monstrous law, it doesn't matter if you as an employer are morally against birth control. You will provide it at no cost to your employees because the government tells you to.

Then there's the whole envy-based class warfare against "the rich". This is the premise upon which President Obama will be basing his re-election campaign. Can't campaign on his failed record or failed policies, so this has to do.

For those on the far left, it's just not fair that the "rich" have more money than they do. Actual work and earning wealth the old fashioned way is just too hard. So they want the government to tax the rich more and put free money into their pockets. They demand entitlements, tax credits, welfare, free health care, food stamps, free birth control, free lunches, free education, free abortions, and on and on and on.

Of course none of it is free. Is it any wonder the Obama-Reid-Pelosi Democrats have run trillion dollar deficits every year since they've been in charge?

The whole modus operandi of the Democratic party is based on tax-and-spend. They are arguably far more intolerant of those who dare to disagree and far worse at imposing their own version of morality on society. To add insult to injury, they want you to pay for it, whether you agree with it or not.

Yet somewhere in the midst of this madness there are reasonable people who can find a middle ground. You won't find them on the extreme left or right.

The best solutions usually have something from the Democrats and something from the Republicans.

Both are needed. Bipartisanship is needed, moderates are needed.

We should reject those extremists on the far left and right who are intolerant of those who disagree with them, and who only contribute to further polarizing our country.

Only about 33% of voters identify as Republican. And of those, many are Libertarian leaning or simply don't care about gay marriage or gay soldiers or medical marijuana. So, since so few voters (perhaps 15 - 20%) are basing their vote on "moral issues", it is truly amazing how these "moral policemen" keep getting elected.

To answer your question, yes, Democrats are for individual freedom and the Republicans are for restricting it.

That is, if, like republican'ts, you consider "Business" as the only individual freedom worth protecting.

Oh, and guns.

How legislating against a woman's choice on what to do with her body is not seen by hypocritical republican'ts as the utlimate form of government intervention into one's life is the perfect example of their particular brand of Conservative stupidity.

Now, try to wrest a penny from their precious bank accounts, and you will hear a collective scream of, "WHOA, get the government out of my life!!!!!!" from them self-righteous darlings.

Other than that? repubs would be perfectly content for you to live your life exactly like they want you to.
