Letter: Camp Verde should start with Declaration of Independence
When was the last time that the Camp Verde Town Council (or any town council) read The Declaration of Independence? Or was guided by it?

Letter: If 'efficiency' is not satisfying rationale for locating classes in Verde, then what is?
I appreciate Mr. LaMaster's advocacy. As taxpayers, we are hugely subsidizing Yavapai College. So, yes, taxpayers should see services they paid for delivered near where they live.

Letter: Students here want nothing more than same education opportunities available in Prescott
Editor:

In response Linda Buchanan's letter in the Sunday, Aug. 9, 2015, edition of Verde Independent, I contradict inaccurate statements. "Set aside the angry agendas of a few individuals ... Leave the political power plays to those with a vendetta."

Letter: Talk about our school system going to pot
It was very interesting to see the article in the Independent this morning about the supposed tax gains to be made via legalized marijuana and the use of this money for our schools here in Arizona.

Letter: Community support made backpack program a huge success
On behalf of the Old Town Mission, we would like to personally thank our faithful community for your recent contribution and participation with our Annual Backpack Giveaway.

Letter: Promotion - for self-preservation?
Even with all the dismal reports of the academic failure of our educational institutions we have scraped the bottom when those educators begin advocating for legalizing marijuana for recreational use.

Letter: Thanks for telling it like it is
Thank you, Dan Engler, for your balanced reporting and opinions on Yavapai College. I appreciate you "telling it like it is," rather than others who have a strong agenda.

Letter: Linda Buchanan deserved better treatment
I find it disappointing and discouraging to read of the allegedly negative comments made to and about Yavapai College's Linda Buchanan.

Letter: Fines increasing in VOCA
VOCA lot owners must comply with rules and regulations set by the Architectural Review and Restrictions Committee (ARRC). Did you know ARRC has the authority to establish rules and restrictions without lot owners' approval?

Letter: Highway 260 is looking good thanks to you
I wish to express my gratitude to the volunteers who helped with the highway 260 cleanup on Saturday, the 15th.

Letter: What happened to recycling in Cottonwood?
I read last week in the Verde Valley News that Sedona Recycles had ended its relationship with Cottonwood because they couldn't come to an agreement.

Letter: 'Guilty As Charged'
In response to Linda Buchanan's letter "Yavapai College education is value-added" in which she referred to "the angry agendas of a few individuals," I plead guilty as charged.

Letter: 'Star struck'
Sure was great to read the rebuttal article to the Verde Independent's editorial on Aug 7, in the opinion and commentary section. Thanks to Bob Oliphant for representing the opinion of the majority of Verde Valley residents when it appears our newspaper Editor was 'star struck' that the Yavapai College President would pay him a visit.

Letter: Thank you Dr. V
Our little Chihuahua, Joey, was bitten by a rattlesnake two weeks ago and almost died. I would like to thank Dr. Vasquez of Complete Pet Care in Camp Verde for saving his life.

Letter: 'Knowing the Truth'
I oppose any agreement with Iran. The nuclear or arms agreement are not worth the paper they are written on.
Tuesday, August 11, 2015

Letter: Where do we go from here?
The change in recycling in Cottonwood is really quite upsetting. As a grandparent, I have continually recycled especially to model citizenship for my grandchildren.

Letter: 'Historic diplomatic achievement'
The Iran deal reached in Vienna is truly a historic diplomatic achievement. The deal keeps Iran from developing a nuclear bomb and keeps the United States from another devastating war in the Middle East.

Letter: Hummingbird Festival 'a huge success'
I would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to the hundreds of volunteers and supporters in the local area who were instrumental in making this year's Sedona Hummingbird Festival a huge success.

Letter: Yavapai College education is value-added
Across the Verde Valley, K-12 students have returned to the classroom. Next week, college students will do the same.  For some, the "classroom" may be an online course, to be negotiated as a student's busy schedule allows. Others will trek back and forth from campus, squeezing in several hours of learning in the traditional face-to-face mode.

Letter: That's not caring
Editor:

I found your Aug. 2, 2015 editorial, "College's dual enrollment program hardly an example of not caring about the Verde Valley" short on facts and disingenuous in content.

Letter: Needs of the greater good
Needs of the Greater Good. Those five words have been bandied around so much they may have lost meaning.
Thursday, August 6, 2015

Letter: Let's make being foster parents the rule and not the exception
Foster parents are needed in our community and state. With so many wonderful families out there, why don't more consider becoming foster parents? Folks often fear the unknown, and becoming a foster parent most certainly is a walk into the unknown.

Letter: Voting Rights Act turns 50 - Congress must restore its protections
August 6, 2015 marked the fiftieth anniversary of the passage of the Voting Rights Act (VRA). This landmark civil rights legislation has protected voters from discrimination for nearly half a century.
Tuesday, August 4, 2015

Letter: His 'bossiness' ensures safety for me and my students
As a client of Red Rock Skydiving and a math teacher at Oak Creek Ranch School, I would like to voice my complaint over the loss of the skydiving service to Cottonwood.

Letter: Oppose monument proposal until water rights issues are clearly understood
As a holder of water rights I have been following the Sedona Verde Valley National Monument proposal with great concern.

Letter: Not convinced of merits of National Monument proposal
We are also concerned about our valuable waterways. No one is clear about how this will affect the future of water in this area.

Letter: Region best served by converting land to National Monument
Editor:

A Sedona Verde Valley Red Rock National Monument could be very good for our region.

Letter: Thanks for help making connections
I want to publicly acknowledge the local merchants, businesses and authors who contributed to Camp Verde Community Library's Adult Summer Reading Program (SRP) 2015. This year, we had over 50 registrants. Participants racked up almost 300,000 points in an effort to win one of seven prize packages. The prizes were made up of items donated by the authors, merchants, and businesses named below.

Letter: Traffic woes on SR 179 need to be addressed
I was stuck in traffic yesterday on 179. It stretched from Hillside to south of Chapel Road. I came to the same conclusion each time I sit idle on 179: it may be time to revisit creating a link between the west end of Verde Valley School Road in the VOC to the Red Rock Loop Road area.
