Editorial: Best face forward for Verde Valley
Lana Tolleson

We live here. We know.

But with increasing frequency, the rest of the world is catching on to the fact that the Verde Valley is one special place to live and visit.

More and more international travel magazines are singing the praises of the Verde Valley thanks to cooperative promotion by the Cottonwood Chamber of Commerce and Arizona Office of Tourism.

The latest is an article in Forward Magazine in Mexico where writer Cindy Agustin noted, "We have read stories of travel through Arizona which refer to a great tourism destination with golf courses, luxurious restaurants for the wealthy and amazing natural beauty. However, we discovered that our neighboring northern state has a thriving gastronomy which vibrates with local urban art and heavy metal."

Erika Sallum's article in Go Outside-Brazil reports that Cottonwood and Sedona are the highlights of Verde Valley. She recommends visiting Page Springs Cellars Winery and Oak Creek Winery owned by a lovely South African woman named Deb Wahl. She recommended visitors spend two to three days in the area.

German journalist Brigitte Bonder highlighted Arizona as an excellent winegrowing region and specifically points to vineyards like the Page Spring Cellars as a can't-miss destination.

Similar recent articles have shown up in magazines in Canada, Brazil, China, England and Germany; one article appeared in 10 different publications in Germany.

Hats off to Lana Tolleson and her staff at the Cottonwood Chamber for building such partnerships with the Arizona Office of Tourism and for her hard work and persistence in spreading the good word about the Verde Valley.

...Lana Tolleson could talk Casey Rooney into substituting the Economic Development Council's logo for the broken wine glass w/leaf?

I'm all for more tourism, which is why I am totally against a symbol that just does not work on any level.

I understand theres a movement to start a new
American Political Party. The party will be started by Military veterans and families to
finally have a party of those who gave us freedom, not those who take away those rights.
We have the the power and it's time to use it.

Lets unleash tourist to soak up our wine and

cash will be put in a trust to help pay our water

We'd do better to build a fence to keep californians out.

Cottonwood gobbles up the $90k month avg sales tax increase over 2013 like water. In the Verde News article, "Cottonwood Expects Modest Growth...6/14/2014" Rudy Rodriguez, Cottonwood's Admin. Serv. mgr. said, "With costs growing faster than revenue...the city has too many expensive irons in the fire, the Fund Balance policy is not being followed for other funds, and the city relies too heavily on sales taxes." None of it benefits the real people. The Chamber of Commerce and the new wine logo is funded by the 3% food tax, 3% rent tax, 3% retail tax, and the 1% utility tax from people with little money.
