Editorial: Nobody celebrates the change of season like the Verde Valley

Dan Engler
Editor

It's a sure sign that fall has arrived in the Verde Valley.

If it's not a look of panic, it's certainly one of concern. And in the Verde Independent newsroom, it's that "look" you see on the faces of your sports reporter and your photographer.

The sports reporter, Travis Guy, takes his last breath of air before diving into the deep waters of high school sports coverage that more often than not confronts him with the dilemma of "how can I be in two places at once."

Staff photographer Jon Pelletier faces the same juggling act as the Verde Valley shakes off the summer doldrums by cramming in more high-profile events and festivals than just about any community in the United States.

Take a look at the schedule:

• Sept. 7 - Jerome Art Walk

• Sept. 11 - Patriot Day: Camp Verde

• Sept. 14 - Ditch Day & Fun Float: Camp Verde

• Sept. 14 - Fiesta del Tlaquepaque: Sedona

• Sept. 20-22 - Cottonwood Thunder Valley Rally

• Sept. 21 - Slide Rock Fall Festival

• Sept. 21 - Celtic Harvest Festival: Sedona

• Sept. 28 - Verde River Day

• Sept. 28-29 - Sedona Wine Festival

• Sept. 29 - Colonel's Daughter contest: Fort Verde

• Oct. 5 - Page Springs Cellars Harvest Festival

• Oct. 5 - Sedona Book Festival at Sedona campus of Yavapai College

• Oct. 5 - Jerome Art Walk

• Oct. 11-13 - Fort Verde Days: Camp Verde

• Oct. 11-12 - Jerome Ghost Walk

• Oct. 12 - Cottonwood Rhythm & Ribs

• Oct. 12-13 - Sedona Arts Festival

• Oct. 19 - Jerome Spook Weekend

• Oct. 19-26 - Sedona Plein Air Festival

• Oct. 26 - Second annual Kudos Folk Music Showcase

• Oct. 26 - Jerome Fire Department Auxiliary Halloween Ball

And that doesn't include the weekly farmer's market events in Cottonwood, Cornville and Camp Verde or the start of a new concert season at the Old Town Center for the Arts.

Hold on to your hats folks, fall is here and nobody celebrates the change of season like we do here in the Verde Valley.

Don't forget one of the best gigs in the Verde Valley on Friday, October 18: Art, Wine & Dine in the Verde Countryside, at Yavapai College - Verde Valley Campus. This is an amazing evening of fun and FUNdraising to support the new workforce and career opportunities at the Southwest Wine Center. Check it out online at yc.edu/artwinedine
