Editorial: Kirkpatrick, Gosar make odd team

It is easy to be cynical about the seemingly cozy relationship that has arisen between Ann Kirkpatrick and Paul Gosar in this congressional term. On the national stage, they have been called the odd couple and for good reason.

They have been on opposite ends of the spectrum on the flashy issues and waged ruthless campaigns against each other when they actually faced off before the district realignment. Now they can be chummy? Really?

But it might be more helpful to look at their work together on several matters as an example of what should be going on in Washington, D.C. There are issues on which Democrats and Republicans actually agree. Their partnership on these issues actually gets work done. Imagine.

Now, these are not concerns that tantalize a jaded media or will land camera-hungry politicians face-time on the networks. To the folks here at home, though, they are important matters that need to be taken care of.

This spring Kirkpatrick and Gosar co-sponsored a bill to correct an old surveying error that affected private property in the Coconino National Forest. Right now they are chatting up copper mining in Superior. The issues are easy and obvious, but that does not stop other politicos from jabbing each other.

Kirkpatrick is a Democrat representing District 1, including Camp Verde. Gosar is a Republican representing District 4, including Cottonwood. Neither is politically middle-of-the-road. Letting bygones be bygones is not the Beltway way, but it seems to be working for these two, at least on the small scale.

Kirkpatrick and Gosar just need to take it a giant step forward and lend the even-handedness and even-mindedness to the lightning-rod issues.

What makes that difficult is the displeasure of their party leaders. Republican honchos are particularly unhappy with Gosar's reaching across the aisle when they consider Kirkpatrick's seat to be vulnerable in the next election. News flash: An AZ1 representative will always be vulnerable in a district comprised of Republican strongholds and Democrat strongholds.

For the moment, maybe until the next election, Gosar and Kirkpatrick seem to understand that teamwork is not collusion or abandoning principles. Teamwork is a sign of something functioning, even in Congress.

@ Frank Henry
Maybe we could start on a local level. There is no reason why Yavapai County can't return to the voting methods that served residents well for most of the last century, and it's an absolute outrage that Arizona State Law now mandates "mail only" ballots for odd-year elections.

Here we have controversial school overrides that affect the entire upper valley. And the County won't know how many ballots arrived at their intended destination, who filled them out, how many mailed them back to the County, and what happened to those that didn't come back. No point worrying about hand-counts vs. machine counts. These ballots aren't worth the paper they're printed on. Why bother counting them at all?

However, I don't think U.S. Representatives Gosar or Kirkpatrick can (or should) do much about this. The County Supervisors and State Representatives need to be galvanized.

we gain "Full Voting Rights" for every voter.

I support the adjustment of the Survey errors, Four Forests Initiative, & Land Exchange. It's refreshing to see that a Democrat & a Republican can work together on something!

Not buying but,

Since I hope we are all self reliant folks, I'm sincerely hoping that we would be willing to meet and search for our common relevance or common ground.

Heck, the first time we do this we could just discuss the weather .... that's a safe subject isn't it?

We could discuss the one-eye I have in the middle of my forehead.

Phil, it was nice talking to you on the phone a few days ago.

Who is willing to meet at Randall's Restaurant or ???????

... is getting his litanies of right-wing mis-info?

Based on earlier writings from this less than scholarly unknown person, his best efforts at offering an opinion were usually, and I quote, at the "Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha," level.

I now note complete sentences and an almost surreal ability to quote sources.

That can't be the m j we all know and... and... and... are forced to tolerate.

Conservative idiocy:

Phylis Schafly wrote that new North Carolina laws to restrict voting are aimed at punishing democrats, not preventing voter fraud.

Rep Louis Gohmert (R. TX) said it's a "scary thought" that liberal elites might be culling the population using vaccines.

Yes, it would help a lot if the security and privacy of our ballots weren't being steadily undermined by whichever party happens to be in power at the moment.

These political ploys don't just drive serious voters away from the polls. They make it impossible for conscientious representatives to know how many constituents actually support their platforms and how many were simply duped, or excluded, or over or under counted by their own party.

So what do we do about it, Frank Henry? Besides send a pat whenever our representative does something we approve and a rap whenever he or she doesn't. (That's an awful lot of postcards/posts when constituents should be getting on with something besides watching their politicians.)

Federal welfare benefits pay more than minimum wage jobs in 35 states, according to a new report from the Cato Institute.
Hawaii provides the most benefits, $49,175 a year. The District of Columbia provides the second highest, providing $43,099 a year.
For the hard-core welfare recipient, the value of the full range of welfare benefits substantially exceeds the amount the recipient could earn in an entry-level job. As a result, recipients are likely to choose welfare over work, thus increasing long-term dependence.

But then how does any representative resolve wedge issues? There has to be a little "collusion" between people who know the legislation and have thought the issue through.
