Editorial: The election is over, let’s give politics a rest

Given the divisiveness of the political landscape today, it’s probably too much to ask that we accept the results and support the winners in Tuesday’s election.

You can’t help but wonder if that would make us a better, stronger, more unified America instead of the mean-spirited, hate-driven, divided country that we have become.

As is the case in any election, the choice we make is to either support or overthrow an existing political regime. In America, we do this through a relatively peaceful process. We vote. In other countries, such a change comes only through violence and loss of life.

So, if we can be that civil through the basic process of voting, why do we insist on being so ugly and spiteful during the campaign process. We’re all guilty. The politicians. The media. The Everyman. Our campaign process today is not far removed from the World Wrestling Federation.

But now that it’s over, let’s give it a break, folks. Step away from it for a while. Give your brain a rest. Go take a long walk. Enjoy the scenery. Refuse to talk politics, for at least a week.

And, it’s probably too much to ask, but let’s try to accept the results and support the winners.

OK MJ. Here ya go. Im am a happy happy happy Independent voter about the election. I assure everyone that the GOP/neoconservate movement is not taking any break from politics.

They are actively working to complete the fascist Reagan Revolution and the reelection of President Obama was a merer hiccup for them.

They do not believe in democracy and have no intention of co-operating, compromising or capitulating.

They will not stop until the Reagan Revolution is complete. They have dedicated themselves to the conversion of America from a constitutional democracy into a corporate [fascist] state.

Taking a break only give the GOP time to regroup and deploy more of their minions in congress to undermine our constitutional democracy.

The price of freedom is eternal vigilance. I remain vigilant against the usurpation of my beloved constitutional democracy by fascism expressed under the guise of neoconservatism.

Article comment by: I agree 100% and will cease and desist...

... immediately.

Of course, you know, that means that no liberal herein will be able to gloat about Obama's victory to those right-wingnuts, also herein, whose extremely narrow intellects could not imagine a Romney loss. (I mean no insult to intellects).

Since gloating is not a good thing, perhaps giving politics a rest is a great idea.

But then, one would not be able to remark about how dumb Karl Rove looked on election night on Fox News as he-- in abject denial that Obama would win-- stammered for words still insisting Romney would win Ohio-- even as Fox News conceded the state to Obama.

Oh! how hard the arrogant genius fell flat on his incredulous face!

T'was a thing of beauty.

And, if we stop talking politics-- which I promise I will-- we would not be able to laugh at the republicant's miserable attempts to find excuses for their defeat, ranging from hurricanes to an ignorant electorate to Obama attack adds.

They are offering every possible excuse except the extreme moronic far-right elitist corporate and Wall Street friendly agenda they tried to foist on America.

I agree whole-heartedly, no more politics for the next coupla days!

I feel better already.

Dearest M J...thanks for your comments, although they will roll off M J with no effect. All of his rantings for the past year about what would happen in November were proven wrong. Rather than be humbled by the experience, he continues his bilious ranting. He was always marginal in this space. Now, he is redundant and immaterial. I suggest ignoring him and perhaps he will go away to salvage just a thread of dignity.

Article comment by: there once was a man named MJ- .

who only agreed with what he had to say

others just have to be, must be all wrong
as he plugs his ears and sings the la la song

busy re-building the bubble that the vote burst
quickly putting his team dead last, not first

please proceed sir, with mortar and brick
build that wall sound proof nice and thick

letting reality pass you by in the blink of an eye
will not change it if ones refuses to see why

in the real world you may be kind and fair
but on the keyboard you fall far from there

so keep building that wall into a nice dome
but leave a breathing hole in your new home

so you can stick around and enjoy the sights
as the time passes and the liberal steal your "rights"

now all those that voted need to stay on the ball
even in red states you need to email and call call call
make your elected officials represent you all
its up to you to break down that wall

Although he makes me crazy on occasion, the editor in chief does a pretty good job. I want to say one thing: these local papers are play a critical part of keeping this town great. If small papers like the VI go under, there will be no one, nothing left to keep officials honest, to check abuses of authority, keep and eye on local budgets, get the facts straight (or at least the official version!) highlight the great things about our unique and very special community etc. Unlike the Phoenix area, there isn't any local TV coverage. All newspapers are going through a hard time. Let's remember how important they are, especially in a small town like ours.

Article comment by: I for one,am not convinced this is 'a time to take a break '

since the topic is 'politics' lets chat about 'governing' for a moment just to amuse ourselves shall we?

A local businessman(who even ran for public office) had been selling the equivalent to Methamphetamine over the counter at his Yavapai county-licensed business.

Maybe for years.

And when he was caught he wasn't even prosecuted. Not even a slap on the wrist. And not only that...numerous other businesses were engaged in the selling of those schedule 1 equivalents too.

Further, this would-be 'public servant' claimed he 'didn't know' what the substances really were that he was selling for so much money.'Didn't know' white powder sold in quantities the size of sugar-packets for $80.00 dollars, were illegal drugs because they had labels like 'fairy dust' and 'white mountain?'

Hold on a minute. I got to get up off the floor. Sure he did. He knew exactly what he was doing.

And that was getting away with selling schedule 1 drugs over the counter to anyone with a buck and had not one worry about the consequences. There were none.

Well he did lose the election.

Who are the dastardly deviants "calling for impeachment?" Who are the "negative nellies," and why should they be treated any differently than positive pansies or neutral nebbishes? These are questions that must be answered before sliding down the slippery slope of censorship. And if these questions cannot be answered to the satisfaction of all VI readers, would it not then be acceptable to censor cries for censorship?

Re: Dearest MJ... .

Of course everyone knows what a liberal means when they say, "when you have something constructive to offer" ...... it means - when you agree with me (the liberal). And everyone knows what a liberal means when they say, "more rational folks" ... it means - people who agree with me (the liberal).

What a miserable group liberals are. You would think they would be happy with obama's election, and they were for a day or so, but deep down they are a miserable lot. Why? Because what they really want is compliance from everyone. They HATE people who disagree with them. Why? Because they are control freaks. Which is why they hate free speech.

uncle joe would be proud of today's demo party.
Try to have a nice day!!! /snark

Finally its over, and our government is basically unchanged. There should be no gloating by us leftist progressive liberals, because President Obama is still facing a republican led house that has spent the last four years being obstructionists to anything coming from the presidents desk, including legislation they had previously supported. If the republican led house chooses to obstruct for the next four years like they have for the last four years it will be hard to see anything improving for anyone but the super wealthy.

Your "typical" conservative response was expected.

While I understand you are having a sad about recent events... you will have 4 years to get over it.

I suggest you take a few minutes of that 4 years and re-read the letter you chose you deride... no where does it question free speech, contrary to your assumption.

Perhaps when you have something constructive to offer you can come back and try again... until then you may be better off getting a sandwich board and standing on a corner predicting the 'end of the world' as we know it... for free all day long.

I am confident that other more rational folks will understand the intent of the comment you chose to mis-construe.

Cheers... and please enjoy the next 1,460 days.

This sounds nice, but the "politics" of this country have been completely. and permanently, polarized. The revenge election of 2012 divided this nation in such a way that we are now either for socialism or against it.
With an economy that is seeing businesses shut their doors in droves while welfare becomes the new prosperity there's not a whole lot to look forward to, except the anxiety of not knowing what's coming next.
If you live solely off the paycheck you earn these are very uncertain times. When I see on the news this morning that FEMA offices in NY are "closed due to bad weather" with thousands there still suffering, well, I just don't see the govt. being the answer.
Ben Franklin once said that when the People realize they can vote themselves money it will be the end of the Republic. He couldn't have been more correct.
