8/19/2011 2:36:00 PM 2011: The Medicare Five Star quality rating system
By Reed Gunnell Executive Director; Verde Vista Care & Rehab
The Five Star Quality Rating System is run by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and was put in place as part of an effort to help educate consumers on quality and make quality information about nursing homes more transparent.
Nursing Homes (now called Skilled Nursing Facilities or SNF) are a very important part of the community.
Due to the higher cost of providing care in the hospital, Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNF) have become a preferred alternative when a patient requires additional treatment that extends beyond just a few days.
Nursing Homes as they used to be called have evolved into rehabilitation facilities that now provide extensive physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy.
Researching and selecting a skilled nursing facility before a surgery can prove to be very helpful.
Surgery will bring the pains of recovery and the emotional highs and lows as the patient moves through the healing process.
Knowing who is providing care and what the quality of that care is beforehand can be comforting to the patient and the family.
It is often stressful and difficult to make decisions after surgery when many of these emotions are at their highest marks.
Nursing Home Compare (http://www.medicare.gov/NHCompare) is a website designed to allow consumers to compare facilities in a simple way.
Through this website, each nursing facility’s overall star ratings are exposed with an explanation to the ratings given.
The areas of criteria are: 1. Health Inspections, 2. Staffing and 3. Quality Measures that include 19 specific care related areas monitored by Federal and State health agencies.
Verde Vista also provides long term care, hospice and respite care for those needing a short rest from care-giving. Speak with your hospice representative for more information.
All insurance plans including AHCCCS and ALTCS are accepted.
The staff at Verde Vista is also available to assist you in a helpful manner by answering questions and providing additional resources that may be needed.
