Verde Heritage -- 1931: JEROME DISASTER; Rock Slide in the Open Pit Mine
"An angry mountain which started 10 days ago to shake off rocks and dirt from its side down the west slope of the United Verde Copper Company steam shovel pit in Jerome, with a final roar sloughed off many thousand tons of waste into the pit last Monday night, enveloping the town in dust and making a noise which could be heard for some distance."

Turning the corner and here is one I'll be coming around again soon; Mariah will be airworthy again by Saturday and I plan on coming around the corner of Agassiz Peak like this again. Cloud tops were about 10,500' and I was at about 11,500' and Agassiz Peak on my left is 12,360'.

"Since I wrote you in regard to the water question in reply to the item in your paper copied from the 'Arizona Enterprise,' I have looked up data and gone back into memory and old books and memorandum and I find that in 1872, C. P. Head & Co. had the grain contracts for the entire territory and that I was their general run about boy or man, and for a good portion of the summer and fall I stayed in Phenix and shipped barley to Date Creek, Whipple and Verde, and at that time there were constructed in the Salt River Valley the Swilling, Griffin and Maricopa ditches on the north side of the river, and the Tempe and Wormser ditches on the south side of the river."

"Harry Hoxworth returned [to Flagstaff] yesterday from a week's trip through the Verde Valley. He places the losses from the recent flood at $50,000 and says that is a low estimate. The waters have subsided now, however, and no more trouble is apprehended."
