County officials: Jail sales tax is preferable to property tax hike
Yavapai County officials repeatedly stressed Tuesday that tourists will pay a sizable portion of the sales tax they want to double so they can build and staff a new Prescott jail.

VOCA always strives for 'Organizational Effectiveness'
Whether a company is a privately or publicly held corporation, or a non-profit entity, the key to sustainability and profitability is to have an effective organizational structure. Since some may contend that this does not apply to homeowners associations such as VOCA, I would like to start with the definition of organization: According to my electronic dictionary, an organization is defined as a body of people with a particular purpose; a business, society, association, etc.

New location for Famous Pizza
Steve Buysse. owner of Famous Pizza, has been in a small location in Bell Rock Plaza for the past 10 years. He had 700 square feet and needed a place were families and groups could come. On Aug. 15, Famous Pizza moved to its new location off of SR 179 still in Bell Rock Plaza with more visibility.

The importance of heirloom seeds
How many lessons we can learn from the back of a seed packet! I used a packet of "Cherry Belle" radish seeds with a group of elementary school teachers to introduce lessons aligned to a range of subjects that they could teach their students from information found there. The object of this staff training was to inspire teachers to use the school garden as an outdoor classroom.

Celtic Harvest Festival returns to Village Sept. 20
The sixth annual Celtic Harvest Festival Sedona will be held on September 20th from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Verde Valley School. Known for its strong focus on Celtic tradition and culture, this will be the first year that the Highland Games will be included in the Sedona Celtic Harvest Festival.

Summertime can be a rather laid back time for your Big Park Regional Coordinating Council, and its business typically moves slowly, as many representatives are off gallivanting in cooler climes. At the Aug. 14 Regular Meeting, however, most representatives were very present and ready to get down to some exciting business.

Yavapai County Jail Tax up for discussion for Big Park Council
Recently, there have been various articles about the Yavapai County Jail Tax proposal that will be on this coming November ballot.

Our Supervisor, Chip Davis, has been a leading spokesperson for the county on this matter. We are pleased to announce that at the next Big Park Regional Coordinating Council on Sept. 11, Chip will be in attendance to fully explain the reasons for this increased tax.

A tale of two Villages
For the last few weeks, I've been visiting our second home in San Jose, California, ironically called the Villages.

This community is comparable in size and constituency to the Village of Oakcreek Association. Similar to VOCA, the community has a golf course, tennis courts, and a restaurant and bistro.
