Council news: Readying for holidays and beyond
Sure enough, here it comes again. The holiday season is upon us, as was clearly reflected at the Nov. 13 meeting of the Big Park Regional Coordinating Council. A spirit of friendly good cheer permeated the atmosphere, as the award-winning governing body of our unincorporated Community got down to business. Festive announcements took the place of controversial issues this month.

Holiday season a busy time at VOCA
It is almost the end of the year, and I don't know where the time has gone. I find it hard to believe that the holidays will be coming soon.

Bright future in 2015 for SVBA
It is amazing to me that this is the last article I will be writing for 2014. As I began to reflect on the year and what SVBA has done I find myself honored by the new business relationships we have made and the items that we have accomplished so far.

Tax credit program a huge bonus to Big Park School
My name is Amaya Romanski and I'm a seventh grader at Big Park Community School.

Everybody loves to go to basketball games and volleyball tournaments, right? What about all the plays we put on? The big question is where does all that money come from?

Although I don't do taxes yet, I know it's a BIG pain. Over the years I have been at Big Park, I have observed how Tax Credit affects our school.

Fond farewell with some fun Arizona history
It has been 10 years since I started writing "Days of Yore." It is time to say good-bye, farewell, and have a good life. Since this article is my swan song, let's have a little fun with Arizona's history.

Dine In, Dine Out: Get us to Greek
We really enjoy Greek food. We have fond memories from our days in Milwaukee -- Oakland Gyros and Kosta's White Manor on Prospect.

Best memories from childhood are from the public library
As the holiday season approaches, I am reminded of wonderful times spent with my family. One of the best Christmas gifts that I received from my grandfather was "The Mystery of the Old Clock," written by Carolyn Keene and first published in 1930.

Slim down with your pet
I know we love 'em all: goldfish, lizards, turtles and tarantulas. But I'm limiting the subject of this article to cats and dogs. (Good luck with slimming down your lizard!)

Gratitude for the holidays and the year
It's hard to believe another year has raced by, where did it go? As people we measure years differently than our feathered and furry companions do, we look to milestones: graduation, career, marriage, children. Our other companions have different paths and challenges to work.

Giving from the heart happens all year long at Red Rose Thriftique
As the holiday season arrives and the spirit of gift giving is upon us we would like to share how your support is making a difference through the Red Rose Thriftique in the Village of Oak Creek. We are proud to be a part of this community and have met so many wonderful animal lovers since our grand opening in July 2014.

Gardening the ultimate expression of faith in future
Our beautiful environment was certainly one of the main reasons many of us chose to live in Red Rock Country. Assuredly it will be up to our children and grandchildren to be the stewards of the nature we all love, and to work to solve environmental problems that they inherit.

Trio of candidates on ballot for Red Rock Enhancement Maintenance District
BIG PARK -- The Red Rock Enhancement Maintenance District is a unique Arizona special taxing district; the only one like it in the state. Arizona statutes were written specifically to govern the maintenance of the rights of way, landscaping, irrigation, sidewalks and trash receptacles that make up the median and roundabouts within the Big Park area. ADOT built the median, but the agency wanted area citizens to maintain it.

Fire, fraud and fixing Jacks Canyon Road
Halloween may be over for us, but the nightmare of the fixing of Jack's Canyon Road lingers on. As it's a rather complicated tale, Yavapai County Assistant Public Works Director, Mike Willett, has described the issue in a separate Villager article (See Page 3).

Resurfacing of Jacks Canyon Road
In 2007, Jacks Canyon Road received new pavement and Asphalt Rubber-Asphalt Concrete Friction Course (AR-ACFC), a thin-wearing friction course and tire rubber product, which acts as a seal coat and provides a quieter road surface. Over time, the AR-ACFC began to degrade, primarily in the intersections, leaving a rough surface and the underlying asphalt unprotected, and it was time to address resurfacing the road.

Time to reflect on the meaning of community
We at VOCA have been going through quite a lively series of discussions and debates as of late, centering on a possible solution to hire a professional company to help us with the management and administration of our homeowners association.

As with any change, there have been lots of questions asked and concerns presented.

Give thanks to the earth! Procure locally! Criollo does!
Carolyn and Norris Peterson together with us were to join a FaithWorks work team near Leupp, AZ on a recent Saturday. We were not certain we could be there by 8 a.m., starting from VOC, so we reserved motel rooms in Flagstaff and decided to eat out.

The Munds of Munds Park
We have all driven through Munds Park on I-17 when we've headed up the Interstate to Flagstaff. Did you know that in addition to Munds Park there is Munds Canyon, Munds Mountain, and Munds Mountain Wilderness? Who was all this beautiful country named for? Obviously it was a family that left its mark on the Arizona landscape and in Arizona history.

Cooler weather and holidays approaching for our pets
Finally we are through the hot summer months and moving into the cooler times. For many of us with horses and dogs, this can mean longer hikes or rides, without the need to awake before the sun.
