When it comes to preserving the pristine beauty of the Village of Oak Creak's night skies from being obliterated by light pollution, the Big Park Regional Coordinating Council is betting on "Lucky 7."

Community's support needed to become dark-sky community
Due to a unique opportunity for our community, I am devoting this month's article on becoming a Dark-Sky Community. At the July meeting, Big Park Regional Coordinating Council received a presentation from Joanne Kendrick from Keep Sedona Beautiful about the difference between Yavapai County's Dark-Sky Ordinances and being a designated Dark-Sky Community.

Village residents warned about utility fraud in VOC
To increase the chances of getting their requests granted, children know to pester parents when they are distracted and busy. The same, apparently, goes for scammers making fraudulent attempts to get your money.

Golf much more than hitting a tiny ball with a big stick
The first time I learned about the game of golf was in high school. I took it as a physical education course since we had to choose an activity in order to get school credit. I wasn't very good at it, and it amazed me why anyone would want to use a stick to hit a tiny ball across the grass.

Sharing ideas key to making local business thrive
I have a confession to make: I haven't made it a practice to stop into local Village businesses and get to know the business owners like maybe I should have.

Is a Shallot an ingredient or a café ... the answer is both
Maybe you knew! And hopefully, like us, you have also eaten shallots at Shallots Café. Located in the space once occupied by Dan's Bistro on 89A, just east of Mexidona, the restaurant opened a few months ago. Shallots roasted with herbs and Roma tomatoes and capped by melted Mozzarella is one of its tasty appetizers.

Gee ... How to you pronounce Tlaquepaque?
Although it looks like it's been around for several centuries, Tlaquepaque (Tuh-lah-kee-pah-kee) is the modern result of one man, Abe Miller, and his dream. Named after a charming suburb of Guadalajara, Mexico, Mr. Miller attempted to recreate the original arts and crafts village that went back to pre-Hispanic times (!).

Your library is best place to learn about your community and the wonders of Arizona
Like many residents of Arizona, I was not born here. However, the first time I visited Sedona in 1978, I knew that I would live here someday. I had a serious case of "Red Rock Fever." Even though I have lived here for 20 years, I still marvel at the beauty of Sedona and the wonders of Arizona.

Feeling the crunch of pet over-population
I was reading an article in the news the other day, it was talking about pet overpopulation and who is responsible...that is a very loaded question to ask.

Solving the problem of weeds
A healthy forest or grassland does not experience the problem of invasive weeds that people have to deal with in their gardens or cultivated fields.

Before your next serious hike, focus on sport-specific training
I am writing this column from the bottom of the Grand Canyon, camping alongside the Colorado River.  No matter how many times I hike this landscape, I am always stunned by the uniqueness and beauty of this majestic canyon.

The changing face of VOCA
I don't recall who said, "the one thing constant is change itself" but reflecting on the last full year that I've been on this board, including the seven months that I've held the position of President, this has indeed been the case for VOCA. Just during my short term in this role, there have been many changes.

As we found out this past month, an emergency in our community can occur at any time as happened with the Slide Rock Fire. How can we be notified when a natural disaster is occurring, a severe weather warning has been issued or there is a community crisis?

Food Neighbors Project weathers summer heat
A blistering Arizona day and many summer-vacationing neighbors put just the tiniest dent in the overall number of bags collected at the June 14 Food Neighbors Project Collection. Even so, our Village/Big Park Community once again came through with remarkable statistics, as 3,647 pounds of healthy food donations were contributed here by generous, dedicated and delighted volunteers.

Ruth Jordan was the original 'Mighty Mite'
The House that Ruth Built - currently known as the Sedona Heritage Museum -- was the home of the Walter Jordan family. Ruth Jordan was the driving force behind the building of the one room cabin that eventually grew to 3,000 square feet of modern ranch house. Quite an accomplishment for this tiny mite of a person.

Ruth Jordan, nee Woolf, was born in Kentucky in November, 1902. Her family moved to Tempe, Arizona, in 1912.
