Never a dull moment for Clerk of Superior Court

The Clerk of Superior Court is an elected official position. The office locations are the courthouses in Prescott and Camp Verde.

It’s a very busy office and our duties and responsibilities are set out in state statutes, court rules, and case law.  We maintain all civil, domestic, criminal, juvenile and probate records.

Among the Office’s responsibilities are to provide public access to the records of the Superior Court (following court rules and statutes); receive, distribute, and preserve official court documents; issue writs and warrants; take and transcribe all court minutes for all court proceedings; act as Registrar of Probate matters; maintain all court exhibits; Jury Commissioner-providing qualified jurors for trials from the lists of all registered voters and holders of driver’s licenses; collect and disburse court-ordered fees, fines and victim restitution; accept passport applications; and issue and record marriage licenses.

The Verde office moved to the new courthouse in Camp Verde in November of 2009 and we love the new facilities.

Our Verde staff includes one deputy jury commissioner, two supervisors, and nine clerks.

Just for the month of December 2011, the Verde staff had 7,728 docket events in our computer management system.

Our office provides courtroom clerks for three full-time Superior Court judges, once a week for the Family Law Commissioner, juvenile dependency hearings once a month and as needed for a visiting judge. A high-profile criminal case was held for most of the spring and summer at the Verde courthouse.

The jury trial took 63 days and had 1134 exhibits. There was media coverage throughout, including Dateline.

For fun, the Verde Clerk’s Office invited the three superior court divisions to participate in a holiday decorating contest with each clerk voting. The categories were nostalgic, neat-as-a-pin, originality, best overall appearance, Clark Griswold (excessive use of lighting and decorations), and Martha Stewart would be proud. The winners were announced at our holiday potluck, and Judge Bluff’s division was the overall winner. Congratulations!

Best wishes for the New Year from the Clerk’s Office.

Sandi Markham, Clerk of Superior Court in Yavapai County
