I love books! I love looking at book covers and reading book jackets. I love holding books and turning pages. I love discussing books, sharing books, and making recommendations for “good reads.”

Like many book lovers, I panic when I don’t have a stack of books. Being from the “old school,” I was a skeptical about purchasing an e-reader device. This dilemma was resolved when my husband proudly presented me with an e-reader. Even though I was surprised and excited to own an e-reader, I felt like a traitor to my beloved books.

That feeling quickly passed, as I learned how to navigate my device and how to download free library books to my e-reader.

Now, I love the convenience of my e-reader. I can check out six books at a time and never worry about overdue fines, as the library loans automatically expire.

When I travel, I can pack my e-reader in my carry-on bag. I no longer have to be concerned about my baggage exceeding the weight limit because I have packed too many books.

With the popularity of e-readers, people are reading more than ever. They are simply choosing different formats. As long as people are reading, there is no debate between traditional printed books and e-reader.

Speaking of e-readers, SPL-V is hosting an e-reader workshop Thursday, Feb. 9, 5-6 p.m.

Join Sedona Public Library staff as they guide you through the steps to download free e-books to your e-reader.

To get the most out of this class, it is best that you become familiar with the basic operations of your e-reader before you come to class.

You will also need your SPL library card and your pin number. If you own a Nook, you will need to bring your laptop.

Due to limited space at SPL-V, you must sign up for this workshop. Please call 928-284-1603 or stop by SPL-V to register.

If this date does not fit into your schedule, you may access the Sedona Public Library website at for information about upcoming e-reader workshops being offered at the main library.

As part of the ongoing Rotating Artist Series Program at Sedona Public Library in the Village, Steve Simon will be the next featured artist. Simon’s exhibit entitled “The Great Peacemakers” will open Tuesday, Feb. 21.

An artist’s reception is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 22, 5-7 p.m.

At 5:30 p.m., the artist will deliver a multi-media presentation featuring videos of the paintings from the collection-in-progress. Steve’s presentation promises to be enlightening and inspirational.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of the Village Book Sale and our Centennial/Anniversary Celebration.
