Golf Tip: Practice with a plan and a purpose
By Gary Pearce
PGA, Head Golf Professional

Many players think hitting balls on the range day after day is actual practice. This is certainly a very good form of exercise but not necessarily good practice. When we practice we need a plan and have a purpose in mind! Remember it’s not the number of balls we hit it’s how we apply our plan and our purpose to the balls that we do hit.

Practice develops good and bad habits. The best player’s in the world are always paying attention to the correct fundamentals. It’s important to establish a practice routine that includes the proper grip, club head alignment, stance, posture and aim. If the best player’s in the world are still paying attention to the fundamentals then we should too.

David Leadbetter, one of the most renowned golf instructors in the world, recommends the following plan for a typical practice session with purpose:

• Spend the first 10 minutes doing some light stretches. This prepares and loosens your muscles in preparation of hitting balls.

• Hit 15-20 easy wedge shots to set up your timing and rhythm. Your wedges are the heaviest clubs in your bag so another opportunity to loosen up your muscles.

• Work your way through the bag, beginning with the shorter clubs up through the longer clubs and then back to the shorter clubs.

• Pick out targets within your abilities and keep track of the number of shots that land in that area.

• Work on your short game, putting, chipping and bunker play.

• And then work on your short game some more!!

Develop a schedule and a practice routine that works for you. You will soon find that having a plan with purpose accelerates your rate of improvement!
