Smith Academy of Self-Defense competes at USA World Championships in Las Vegas.
The Smith Academy of Self-Defense, a traditional karate academy located in Cottonwood, attended the USA World Championships on June 26 in Las Vegas, NV and brought home 14 places.

Camp Verde thrower Alyssa Watkins heads to Nationals in Jacksonville, FL
After qualifying in hammer and javelin at the USA Track & Field Regionals in El Paso, TX on July 11, Camp Verde Senior Alyssa Watkins will travel to Jacksonville, Florida with her mother and coach Pam Edgerton to compete in the Junior Olympic National Meet.

Camp Verde football heads to Concordia University, in Irvine California.
Three years ago, Steve Darby the head coach of the Camp Verde Football team started taking his team to Concordia University in Irvine California. Darby said it was something that started when he was at Mingus High School and he wanted to incorporate it into Camp Verde Football culture.

New Verde Valley resident experiences hiking trails aplenty in Sedona
I have lived in the Verde Valley for just over four months, and one of the many things my mom told me before moving out here was you have to go to Sedona, that it's absolutely gorgeous. That is what sparked my interest in hiking, and it is one of the most enjoyable things I have experienced since moving out here.

The Verde Valley and Camp Verde 11- and 12-year-old Little League All Star teams met in an Arizona Little League District playoff game Wednesday night and Verde Valley won 16 to 5.

Cottonwood Recreational women's softball finishes tournaments
COTTONWOOD - The Cottonwood Recreational women's softball league finished its tournament play on Thursday in both the A league and B league. Team Baby Mamma's won the A league Championship by defeating the Pain Crushers, 14-4. Team Red Rock Dental won the B league championship by beating team Kare Bears by a score of 17-7.

Clippers swim hard in Sedona
SEDONA -- Over the weekend, the Cottonwood Clippers recreational swim team competed in a meet at the Sedona City Pool against Sedona Swordfish, the Flagstaff Snowsharks, the Payson Pikes and the L Jax of Flagstaff.

As of Monday, results still weren't available, but head coach Daniel Nevarez said he was pleased with his team's performance.

Cottonwood softball leagues heading to tournaments
COTTONWOOD--Cottonwood Recreational women's and men's softball leagues are wrapping up. The women's leagues will start their tournaments on Tuesday. The men's league has one more week of the regular season before the tournament starts. The women's tournaments will be one tournament for the A league and one tournament for the B league.

COTTONWOOD-- Mingus Union High school girls basketball season won't officially start until November.

But, the Marauders have been already getting things going with offseason summer practice and tournaments.
