Mingus volleyball looks impressive in first win
COTTONWOOD -- Mingus volleyball hadn't got off to a great start. The team was 0-2. The Marauders lost both of the matches 3-0. But, Friday night things went much better. Mingus beat the Mohave (Bullhead City) High School Thunderbirds 3-0.

COTTONWOOD -- Wednesday, the Mingus Union High School Golf team hosted both Liberty High School (Peoria) and Valley Vista High School (Surprise). Mingus has all its home matches at Verde Sante Fe golf course in Cornville.

The Mingus Union High School football team hasn't started its season as according to plan. The Marauders lost their season opener to Snowflake 37-6. The following week, they lost at home to Cactus (Glendale) 41-14, despite leading the game 14-7 in the second quarter.

On Tuesday, the Mingus Union High School swim team had its first meet of the year. The meet was a competition featuring three teams. Mingus was the home team, as the meet was held at Cottonwood recreational center. The other two teams were Arete Preparatory Academy (Gilbert) and Flagstaff High School.

New powerlifting records established
Aug. 24, 2014 saw Daniel "Dan the Man" Razo set three Arizona State Bench press Records and win his Division at the AAU "Spartan Iron Classic" held in Prescott Arizona. Razo, the newest Member of the Rec-N-CRU POWER TEAM, had three successful lifts of 155 pounds, 165 pounds and 175.

Aftershock runners launch new season in style at Waddell Labor Day race
WADDELL -- Josh Reilly and Allyson Arellano turned in the top performances for the Aftershock Distance Running Club in the Labor Day 5K/10K.

In the mens' 5K, the 13-year-old Reilly was second overall in the race that attracted 82 runners. He finished with a time of 17:22.

COTTONWOOD -- The Mingus Union High School volleyball season hasn't started out well. The Marauders started their season losing to Prescott on the road last Tuesday and then at Sedona on Thursday. Mingus lost both matches 3-0.

Ace at Verde Santa Fe
Marc Cooper shot a Hole In One on the #2 hole at Verde Santa Fe Golf Course during the Labor Day Torunament sponsored by the Verde Santa Fe Golf Course. Marc used a 8 iron from a 127 yards.The picture is Scott Robinson (on the left) presenting Marc Cooper with his Hole In One Trophy.

Myles Latimer of Cottonwood recorded a Hole in One on Saturday, Sept. 6th at the Coyote Trails Golf Course. Myles used a pitching wedge to ace the 155 yd. 4th hole. Witnesses were his father Mike Latimer, Jason Steward, and Dean Contreras.

Mingus swimming launches season Tuesday
COTTONWOOD -- Mingus Union High School's swim team will have its first meet on Tuesday against Flagstaff and Arete Prep. The Marauders swim all their home meets at the Cottonwood outdoor swimming pool. First-year-head coach Gretchen Wesbrock said she is excited about the season.

New Year, same old results for Mingus football.(With photo gallery.)
COTTONWOOD -- The Mingus Marauders came on the field Friday hoping for a better result than last week's 37 -6 loss at Snowflake. It looked promising for Mingus early on. The team led 14-7 in the second quarter. But after a bad second half, the Marauders lost to the Cactus Cobras 41-14.

Mingus is now 0-2 for the second, just as the team was a year ago.

Next for Mingus Football: Cactus
COTTONWOOD -- Last week, the Mingus High School football team didn't start its season as according to plan. The Marauders lost to Snowflake 37-6. It doesn't get any easier, as they will play Cactus (Glendale) at home this Friday.

After the loss, head coach Bob Young said that Cactus is even better than Snowflake. Young said the team has moved on from the game and is focused for this Friday.

Jerome Hill Climb 2014 (with photo gallery)
More than 250 runners converged on Jerome to tackle the Jerome Hill Climb Sunday morning, one of the oldest continually run races in Arizona. The grueling race leads runners through the historic town and out to Perkinsville Road. The race is one of the signature events of the Arizona Road Racers and features an elevation climb of 1,076 feet over the 4.5-mile course. This was the 45th annual edition of the race. The Marauders' season did not start as they had planed Friday. The team lost its season opener 37- 6 to the Snowflake Lobos. Head coach Bob Young said his team simply just got outplayed.

After a long off-season, Mingus is ready to go
On Friday night,the Mingus Union High School football Marauders will begin the 2014 season. Last year, it was a tale of two different seasons. During the first six games, the team played poorly. Its record was 1-5. But then, Mingus turned it around and finished the season 5-5.

Personal emphasis on personal fitness is cornerstone of rec center personal training
Athletics can serve many different purposes for different people. Some compete in team sports, while others are individual. Some participate in sports just for fun. Others do it to better their lives. For those individuals, the Cottonwood Recreational Center offers them that chance.

This past January, the center started a personal training program. Roxanne Hrinko is one of the personal trainers. Hrinko has been a personal fitness trainer for 33 years. She said training each person is different, but there are some similarities.

Tournament Champs
The Verde Valley Heat Elite 14-U fastpitch softball team won the USA Showcase Sports softball tournament at Rose Mofford Sports Complex in Phoenix over the weekend. The team went 5-0 in the tournament, going 3-0 in Saturday's pool play games and earning a bye in the first round of Sunday's bracket play.
