After a long off-season, Mingus is ready to go
On Friday night,the Mingus Union High School football Marauders will begin the 2014 season. Last year, it was a tale of two different seasons. During the first six games, the team played poorly. Its record was 1-5. But then, Mingus turned it around and finished the season 5-5.

Personal emphasis on personal fitness is cornerstone of rec center personal training
Athletics can serve many different purposes for different people. Some compete in team sports, while others are individual. Some participate in sports just for fun. Others do it to better their lives. For those individuals, the Cottonwood Recreational Center offers them that chance.

This past January, the center started a personal training program. Roxanne Hrinko is one of the personal trainers. Hrinko has been a personal fitness trainer for 33 years. She said training each person is different, but there are some similarities.

Tournament Champs
The Verde Valley Heat Elite 14-U fastpitch softball team won the USA Showcase Sports softball tournament at Rose Mofford Sports Complex in Phoenix over the weekend. The team went 5-0 in the tournament, going 3-0 in Saturday's pool play games and earning a bye in the first round of Sunday's bracket play.

There is no question that sports require a great deal of time and commitment. In high school, student-athletes have to manage their time between both academics and athletics. For some, that may be easy. But, for others, it's not so much. When grades become an issue, players are forced to miss a game or more.

Over time Young has proven he is more than a coach
In sports there are some coaches who are only that. Then, there are some who are more. That is the case of Mingus Union High School's Bob Young. Young is currently the head football and baseball coach at Mingus. He has been there for almost 30 years. During that time, he has taught science and physical education. He has also coached football, baseball, softball and basketball.

There are some athletes who can just do it all. Thirteen-year-old Josh Reilly may be one of those.

Josh is a triathlon athlete in running, swimming and cycling. Micah Swenson, head coach of the Aftershock Distance club, said Josh has shown great improvement as a runner.

Mingus football team looks to start how it finished
COTTONWOOD -- Momentum in sports can be a valuable thing. The Mingus Union High School football team is hoping it can carry into this season.

Last year, the Marauders got off to a horrible start. The team began its season 1-5. It would have been easy to give up, but that was not what Mingus had in mind. Instead, the team went on a four-game winning streak and ended the year 5-5. The impressive run included a season final 27-3 victory over Prescott.

District Champions
The Verde Valley's 9-10 year-old softball team captured District Tournament championship in Wickenburg. In the first game, Verde Valley defeated Williams 14-0 in four innings, with pitcher Chloe Shults on the mound. In the second game, Verde Valley defeated Bagdad 11-0, with Carah Shilling on the mound, and in the championship game defeated Bagdad a second time 11-2 in 5 innings. Courtesy photo
