"He was who we thought he was"
Former Arizona Cardinals coach Dennis Green, is probably best known for his rant: "They were who we thought they were, and we let them off the hook," Green angrily shouted, hitting the podium at his after game press conference. Green, was angry after his Cardinals blew a 20-0 halftime lead against the Chicago Bears in 2006. Green died from complications of cardiac arrest late Thursday night. He was 67.

Larson's Gym members invited to Thailand after a big Muay Thai kickboxing win in Des Moines, Iowa
Clifford Larson, coach of Larson's Gym of Camp Verde (and member of the Yavapai-Apache Nation) confirmed on June 30 that Camp Verde kicking box team member will travel to Thailand to participate in an international Muay Thai tournament beginning August 22 and ending September 1.

Marauders head to Concordia University for annual camp
At Mingus Union High School even during voluntary conditioning, all you have to do is take a look around to feel the intensity of practice. Music blared from speakers Monday to help the team get used to crowd noise. And yes, it is game time at this 4A school. Coach Bob Young has his assistants running a well-organized practice to where the players sprint at the sound of a whistle for their water breaks.

COTTONWOOD - Verde Valley All-Stars coach Jeff Lynch received a well-deserved Gatorade ice-water bath from a few of his players a short time after his squad edged the Prescott All-Stars, 4-3, to win the Arizona District 10 Little League Majors Tournament here on Saturday, July 9.

Head Coach Bob Young and the Mingus Marauders broke their State Playoff drought last year with a regular season record of 9-1, before they fell to the Verrado Vipers in the first round. Last year they were led by senior quarterback Jordan Upham, but it seems they may have a new leader coming into the fold after the departure of the elusive quarterback.

Football in the Verde Valley last season brought a number of exciting story lines to Friday nights under the lights at both Camp Verde and Mingus Union High Schools. Although the two teams had different outcomes to their seasons, they both improved throughout the season, and this season should be more of the same for both programs.

Sedona's Lineberry Selected as Southwest Junior Team Coach
On Friday, June 3, United States Professional Association Master Professional Larry Lineberry was selected as the coach of the Southwest Boys & Girls, 16 & under, Zonal team. The team will play in competition in Salt Lake City, Utah the week of July 6 to the 11. This is the fifth consecutive year that Lineberry was been chosen to coach the team.

Saturday night brought 10 Verde Valley fighters to Cortez High School in Phoenix for another installment of the Ultimate Combat Fighting Challenge. Two of those fighters, Manuel Robinson of Dragon's Eye and Ezequiel Casillas of Golden Cobra squared off for a Regional Title in a battle that went all five two-minute rounds.

Yavapai beats Iowa Western 7-3, advances to national title game
For the first time in a decade, Yavapai College's baseball team has qualified for the championship of the JUCO World Series after notching a 7-3 victory over NJCAA No. 4-ranked Iowa Western in an elimination game on Thursday, June 2, at Suplizio Field.

Five-time national champion San Jacinto-North of Texas (3-1 record in the Series) lost to Chattahoochie Valley of Alabama (3-1), 13-3, in the winners' bracket final Thursday night. San Jac and Chattahoochie will play again at 6 p.m. today, June 3, to decide which team faces Yavapai (4-1) in the national title game at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 4.

Gus Henley earns Division III 1st team All-Division nod
If you attended any Mingus Baseball games this year, there was probably one reoccurring theme you saw over and over again. Pitchers were rotated and players were moved around the infield and outfield, but it was a rarity not to see catcher Gus Henley behind the plate, relaying pitch signals and keeping his pitchers calm and collected when needed.

"One day my dad asked me if I would rather be a singer or a bowler," 42-year-old Dan Razo said after finishing up another rep on the bench press at the Cottonwood Recreation Center. "I told him neither, I want to be a weight-lifter. Cause that's my No. 1 goal, to be a weightlifter."
