Tim McKeever Sr. was told this week he'll be the recipient of the 100 % RAW Southwest Region Master Lifter of the Year award. It's based on what you do for the federation, what you've done for your team, and how much you lift.
"I set a national record in March in the bench press, I broke that in June when the REC-N-CRU hosted a meet. I also set a world record in the curl back in June and I broke it again in Las Vegas," said McKeever.
The designation "Master" means McKeever is over 40, but he's really over 60. His bench press is currently at 350 pounds and his curl is at 140.5 pounds.
Since retiring from law enforcement, McKeever dedicated himself to building a powerlifting team in Cottonwood. He had success right off the bat, but it just keeps getting better for the REC-N-CRU.
"This year has been great for our team as well. A lot of our lifters have broken records and shattered personal goals," said McKeever. "I'm sure hosting the American Challenge meet at the rec center was a factor in receiving the award. It takes a lot to lift, coach, and help run a meet. Everyone that came for that event was very impressed with the facility and our community."
McKeever plans to host more meets at the Rec Center next year to make Cottonwood a powerlifting destination. He's also working on putting a competition squat rack and deadlift platform in the weightlifting triangle at the Rec Center (they already have a competition bench).
"We've got April 6th and 7th next year, that will be a Southwest regional meet here at the rec center, and at the end of June or the first part of July we'll do the American Challenge again and we've already got people excited to come back here to lift," said McKeever. "The 100 % Raw federation is growing by leaps and bounds, and it's growing all over the world. Cottonwood is on the map for powerlifting and we just want to keep building that momentum."
Trophies and plaques sit on display in the corner of the weight-lifting triangle at the rec center, along with newspaper clippings and pictures of CRU members setting world records. The only problem is finding enough space for all the hardware!
If you would like to join the REC-N-CRU, or just get some guidance in lifting weights, you can find McKeever most afternoons lifting at the rec center. He's the gray beard pumping more iron than you.
