Playing in what can best be described as "football weather," the Camp Verde and Cottonwood mighty mites faced off in the consolation championship game, with the Camp Verde Coyotes taking home third place with a 14-7 win.
Under gray skies and playing in rough winds and rain, the mites braved the elements and played each other down to the wire.
After holding the Coyotes on their opening drive the Mingus Marauders (the mighty mites team, not the high school team, that would not be fair) marched down the field and found the end zone. Running in the extra point, the Marauders were up 7-0 on the cross-valley rival.
Camp Verde would not be denied. On its ensuing possession, the Coyotes broke off some solid runs, eventually getting into the end zone as well. But instead of going for the extra point, Camp Verde elected to kick a PAT. Because it is more difficult for the children to kick the football between the uprights, a PAT is worth two points. The Coyotes kick was good and they took their first lead of the game, a lead they would maintain for the remainder of the contest.
The Marauders battled for the rest of the game, but they were not able to score again. In fact, it was the Coyotes that scored once more, putting the score at 14-7. But a stopped extra-point attempt had the game within reach for the Marauders.
The Coyotes defense held tough, and when the final bell rang, the Camp Verde Coyotes celebrated their third place win.
