It has been almost four months since Golden Cobra Center of Fitness held a fight night in Cottonwood, but the gym made its triumphant return with a card that may have been light on bouts, but heavy on action.
Taking place in the parking lot of Vinnie's New York Pizzeria, the New York Style Throwdown not only benefited the gym, but also helped promote the pizza restaurant's new location.
Typically, Golden Cobra is represented by a slew of its "mini-cobras" scattered throughout the card. But because most of them play football during the fall, the gym was only represented by two fighters.
Fighting in exhibition matches, or demonstrations, Sammy Williams and Manuel Robinson showed that they have what it takes to be successful in the sport.
Williams got things started as the first bout of the night. As soon as the bell rang, the eight-year-old ran toward his opponent and hit him with a big hook. He followed that up with a few more punches and dropped his foe.
Following the eight-count, the referee restarted the action. Williams wasted little time, dropping his overmatched opponent once more, forcing the ref to call a halt to the bout.
In the final fight before the intermission, Robinson put on a clinic in front of the raucous crowd. Both him and his opponent came out guns blazing, but the Cottonwood fighter was the cleaner combatant, landing whatever he wanted almost at will.
Using his full arsenal of punches, kicks and knees, the 13-year-old Robinson did what he wanted.
In the end, there was no winner declared, as there was a large age gap, Robinson was fighting a 16-year-old, which contributed to the fight being a demo.
When the judges were asked whom they would of scored the bout for, if it had been a sanctioned fight, they all said it would have been a unanimous decision for Robinson.
