For all of you wondering what the heck I’ve been doing and ‘why are there no sports updates?’ I had a family emergency. Everything is fine now and back to normal.
In fact, I would have covered games Tuesday, but then I came down with the flu and a high fever. It’s been going around far too much this season and I didn’t want to risk infecting anyone else.
Anyway, here is a rundown of the stories I missed over the last few days.
The top story is the Camp Verde Wrestling team taking names at the Page Sand Devil Classic. Did you expect anything less? Matt Mejia (106), Alex Casillas (113), Isaiah McReynolds (126), Ryan Allred (132), Joel Lobaugh (145), Chance Weir (152 extra), Heath Carroll (160), and Anthony McBeth (HWT) all went undefeated over the weekend as the Camp Verde team scored 300.5 points, 137 more than the second-place Prescott Badgers.
It could have been worse.
Senior Elmer Ruiz (220) couldn’t participate because of illness (I totally understand), so the ‘Boys scored 300.5 points without a full team. The Cowboys had 10 wrestlers in the finals and seven of them won. Alex Noone (121), Michael Nelson (138), and Alex Anzar (152) took second.
The big question is, how many Cowboys wrestlers will win at the state tournament? They could set a school record and make me the busiest, most dedicated sports photographer at Tim’s Toyota Center (as if there was any doubt).
It’s a shame I missed the cross-valley basketball games--they were so intense in Camp Verde last week. Mingus hosted the Cowboys Tuesday and the girls’ game was close; Camp Verde completed the season sweep, 49-43.
The boys’ game . . . not so much. Mingus beat the Cowboys, 56-27. That’s the least amount of points scored on the Marauders this season. The red and gray squad now has 10 wins, equaling their total from last year. They have four remaining games on their schedule.
The Mingus soccer teams did not have good showings against Flagstaff. The Lady Eagles piled it on against Mingus on Bright Field, 5-0. The Mingus boys had no better luck up North, losing 5-0.
Here are local games coming up you should know about.
Thursday, Jan 24
Camp Verde boys and girls basketball host Sedona
Mingus boys soccer hosts Coconino
Saturday, Jan 26
Mingus boys and girls basketball host Mohave
I'll be back to my old self in no time, running around with my camera and recorder, hunting for the next sports story that will save the world.
