Obituary: Joy Annette Henderson 1942-2013

Joy arrived in this world in Denver, Colorado, on September 22, 1942, the first child of Ward and Dorothy Mathews.  She departed from Cottonwood, Arizona on July 22, 2013 to be with her God.

She was married for 52 years to Bud Henderson of Cottonwood.  The mother of two daughters, Sharon Broady of Telluride, Colorado, and Catherine Nickels of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, and a son Stephen who predeceased her.

She was employed as an emergency medical technician and a dental assistant, but considered her most important job to be raising her children.  Joy spent many hours volunteering in the public schools; in programs supporting abused and neglected children, as a Verde Valley Caregiver, as an avocational archaeologist and with her church.

She was the unsurpassable volunteer - recognized by the Yucaipa, California school district with its "Founder's Day" award and by the Grand County, Colorado, Grand County Resources for Youth with its "Special Achievement" award for her involvement with teens with drug problems, by the Verde Valley Chapter of the Arizona Archaeology Society with their "Lifetime Achievement" award for initiating archaeology programs in the Valleys elementary schools, and by St. Thomas Episcopal Church with the 2013 diocesan "Woman of the Year" award, just for being who and what she always was - everyone's "woman of a lifetime."

Memorial service will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 889 First South Street, Clarkdale, AZ, Saturday, August 3, 2013 at 1PM.  Reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, please let someone you care for, know, by saying "I Love You!"

Joy was the most giving person I've ever met. Even beyond that, she was kind and compassionate, courageous and strong, loyal to a fault, fun and fun loving. A shining star has returned to Home to Heaven. Joy, I love you!

Bud and Joy were our best friends. Joy was an inspiration to all who knew her. How many dozens of times I tried to get her to slow down, but Joy was like the energizer bunny - she just kept on going, doing and giving of herself. She will always remain in our hearts as a treasured friend and she will never be forgotten. Our deepest sympathy to the family. We look forward to seeing Bud in Florida.

Brian, you said it best...Joy and Bud lit the place up when they came to the PD. Both with so much dedication and compassion. Heaven gained a real treasure. Bud, please let us know if there is anything you need and you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Joy you will be missed. Your smile was contagious and I always enjoyed when you and Bud would come into the station. You were a true fighter with a caring heart. The article forgot to mention how many volunteer hours you put in at the PD and how much you helped the community by doing so. You did this even when you were sick and battling your illness. Rest in peace Joy, you will not be forgotten. Bud, you and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.
