Claudia Jean Arney 1935 - 2010
Claudia Jean Arney
Claudia Jean Arney

Claudia Jean Arney was born in Decorah, Iowa on November 10, 1935, the daughter of Olaf and Alice Odegaard, and died in Clarkdale on April 17, 2010. She lived in Manchester, Iowa before moving to Marshalltown, Iowa, where she completed her high school education. Mrs. Arney graduated from nurses training at St. Luke's Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids, later earning her BA in nursing at Augsburg College in Minneapolis.

She was a long time active member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Golden Valley, MN, and worked as an RN at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis for 20 years.

She and her husband raised three children in Minneapolis.

Upon retirement in 2004, they moved to Clarkdale, AZ and joined Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church. Mrs. Arney is survived by her husband of 50 years, Craig, three children; David (Becky) of St. Paul, MN, Meredith (Mark) of Columbo, Sri Lanka, and Kristin (Mark) of Harare, Zimbabwe, and four grandchildren: Zachary, Kayla, Sophia and Sonia.

Claudia will always be lovingly remembered as "Super Mom" by her children, for the grace and dignity with which she endured this horrible disease (MSA) and for the eloquence with which she described life's great loves, joys and challenges in her poetry: "Don't give up! Celebrate what is left. Spend it wisely." In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church, 101 S. Main St., Suite D, Cottonwood, AZ. 86326.

A memorial service will be held at Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church at 10am on Friday April 23.

Dear Craig,
Jim Blood e-mailed me about Claudia's departure. You may remember that Gordy and I sang with the Calvary Choir and went on the trip to Germany. Sadly, Gordy passed away 3 years ago after dealing with alzheimer's for many years. Memories of you and Claudia are of two very pleasant and commited people who we enjoyed spending the two years that we were in the choir and the trip. My sympathy and prayers for strength at this difficult time are there for you.

Craig, David, Meredith, and Kristin
So many thoughts and feelings come to me as I remember Claudia as a friend for over 40 years. When we met as neighbors in Golden Valley even to my last visit with her two weeks ago, I will always cherish her genuine, loving spirit.
God Bless You!

Dear Craig and family (especially Kristin)
Our deepest sorrow and sympathies are with you at this sad time. Memories of Claudia are of such a gentle, kind, loving soul. We are so sorry for the suffering she endured, but I'm sure she did it with such grace. Now she is free of pain and dancing with her loved ones (and maybe my Mom and Dad and Bart). Blessings and Love to all of you - May God be your comfort and strength through the coming days and weeks.
Our love, Cheryl and Amy Gustafson
