RACISM AND POLITICS
I hope that a majority of people use common sense, as does Danny Morton ("It's not racist to question policy", letters, 2/5/12), when reading a piece such as that submitted by John Bond in the 29 January opinion section.
Character assassination has become the weapon of choice in today's political arena, but it becomes especially despicable when the slur of "racist" is used against every opponent of a policy. That, however, will become the point of the spear used against the GOP in this year's election cycle. Mr. Bond's rant is simply following the lead of the far left and is miniscule in comparison to what is coming. Jesse Jackson's recent comments are an example. Mr. Morton complained that "Bond's letter comes dangerously close to accusing the whole South of racism." The good Reverend Jackson selected an entire class - Republicans! By generalizing any opposition to Mr. Obama's policies as based on racism he attempts to taint critics before they can argue a point.
That this country was ready for a Black as president is unquestioned. We have an abundance of highly qualified Black men and women. Unfortunately, the left chose to run an inexperienced, neighborhood organizer with an agenda to move the country in a direction that, to their dismay, it was not ready to move. But, if Mr. Obama is not re-elected it is not tolerable to the left for his presidency to be viewed as a failure of policy. Therefore, it is incumbent upon them to paint the opposition as racist in order to explain a possible defeat - a position that is indefensible as it does not explain his election of 2010. To Mr. Morton I say "You ain't seen nuthin' yet!"
