Rewarding Work as TIP Volunteer
By Judi Dulci
I became a TIP volunteer this year. What is TIP? It stands for Trauma Intervention Program and the name fits the job to perfection because the purpose of the program is to try to prevent lasting emotional trauma as a result of a traumatic life event.
In short, TIPsters are in training to be angels. One never knows what will be required of one during a call. It could be we might be called to the scene of a multi-car accident, or a suicide, or domestic violence incident...since the police or fire departments or the sheriff's dept. are the ones that call us, it's possible we could be called to any scene to which they are called. What we offer is a comforting presence, compassionate listening, and information to help them get through the first few hours of trauma.
So how does one prepare to do this kind of work? In one word: THOROUGHLY. You can imagine how important it is to be trained for any eventuality to be able to help someone who's perhaps saving what might be the worst day of their life.
To be a TIPster all you need is a big heart...well, that's not exactly ALL you need. I guess you could think of us as good samaritans with training to know how to JUST BE WITH SOMEONE who might benefit from a gentle, reassuring touch or hug, along with some good information on resources available to lend a hand with food, clothing, shelter, counseling.
If you would like to know more about this work you can check out their website. If you would like Sue or Christine to come and speak to your group about this volunteer opportunity, they would be happy to oblige.
