Emilia Alvarez Carrillo’s 97th Birthday

A huge family gathering celebrated the 97th birthday of Emilia Alvarez Carrillo with Mariachi music band festivities at the home of her son Ernie Carrillo in Clarkdale, Saturday. Born on the Alvarez ranch, Emilia is the only surviving child of Verde Valley pioneers Rosendo and Julia Mejia Alvarez, who homesteaded near Sycamore Canyon beginning in 1908. The party included her remaining children: Ernie, Vera, Stella, Joe and Emilia’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

I am so delighted to see Emelia's picture, and learn of her 97th birthday. We both worked for the Town of Clarkdale in the early 1960s. I remember how kind she was to me.

Happy Birthday, Emelia. Hope it was the best ever.

Emelia Alvarez Carillo and her family are a true treasure for those who appreciate the history of the Verde Valley. The story of her family's life in the upper stretches of the Verde River near the mouth of Sycamore Canyon during prohibition, the depression and her brother's service during World War II is inspiring.

Thanks for having this article and I am sure the party was a good one.
