Sara Shafer, a second year nursing student at Yavapai College in Clarkdale, AZ, has been awarded a P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education Scholarship in the maximum amount of $2,000.

The scholarship, sponsored by the P.E.O. Sisterhood, was established in 1973 to provide need based grants to women in the United States and Canada whose education has been interrupted and who find it necessary to return to school to support themselves and/or their families. The P.E.O. Sisterhood is a philanthropic, educational organization committed to encouraging opportunities for higher education for women.

The scholarship was awarded to Ms. Shafer as the result of efforts by Mrs. Cynthia Fox, a member of the local chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood.

Mrs. Fox sponsored Sara and assisted her in applying for the scholarship after hearing her brave story. Ms. Shafer interrupted her college education after being severely injured in a motor vehicle accident at the age of 23, and endured over four years of reconstructive surgeries before returning to school to pursue her dream of becoming a critical care nurse.

During her college career Sara has maintained a 4.0 GPA and has received multiple academic awards.

Following graduation in May 2009, Ms. Shafer hopes to gain a position at Verde Valley Medical Center in the Intensive Care Unit while continuing her education in the hopes of one day obtaining her Master's Degree and Nurse Practitioner license.
