ST. LOUIS -- The 2013 Purina Outstanding Derby Dog is Kirkwood's Ace of Lone Star ("Lexie"), owned by Casey Adams of Clarkdale, Ariz. Lexie was among the nation's top-performing field trial retrievers recognized at the Purina Outstanding Retriever Awards in Ellinger, Texas, in April.
With 10 wins and 23 placements in 2013, Lexie, a Labrador Retriever whelped on Dec. 27, 2011, had a remarkable year. "From the day I picked her up at the airport and opened the crate door, she showed me she was different in a very good way," said Adams, who attended his first field trial four years ago after seeing a flier in a sporting goods store.
After starting her on the basics, when she was 5 months old, Adams took Lexie to John Henninger and Amie Duke of Tru-Line Retrievers in Jefferson, Ore.
"At 13 months old, she won three trials in a row, showing us that she really was special and giving us both our first blue ribbons," Adams said.
Lexie is fueled by Purina Pro Plan SPORT Performance 30/20 Formula.
Owners and handlers of the winning dogs were honored at a banquet attended by 125 people held in conjunction with the Brazosport Retriever Club Field Trial. The winners received specially designed and engraved Purina Award plaques, oil paintings of their dog by artist Ross Young, and banners honoring their dogs. The winners also received a year's supply of Purina Pro Plan SPORT Performance 30/20 Formula for one dog.
Dean Reinke, Purina Area Manager responsible for the retriever segment, served as master of ceremonies and congratulated all the winners. "The turnout for this event continues to grow and we intend to build on this success in honoring these amazing retrievers again next year," Reinke said.
The Purina Award program is administered and scored by an Award Committee of experienced retriever enthusiasts. The 2013 committee included Eugene Anderson of Denver; Dennis Bath of Belleville, Ill.; Dr. Thomas Strickland of Albany, Ga.; Gary Zellner of Scio, Ore.; and retriever professional trainers Mike Lardy, Danny Farmer, Bill Eckett, Dave Rorem, and Jerry Patopea. Tina Styan, Managing Editor of Retriever News, serves as statistician.
The fourth-annual free workshop held in conjunction with the awards was presented by Danny Farmer and Dave Rorem. Drawing more than 80 handlers and observers, it focused on helping handler-dog teams prepare for competition.
