COTTONWOOD -- "Crazy Horse," Fire Mountain Wines impressive steed, won the Run for the Roses Saturday in Old Town. in was the first running of the Cottonwood Derby Cup, the hot new contender to that Churchill Downs event. The winner was presented a ring of real roses and a crystal trophy.
The lead horse was followed by "El Loco Caballo" of Fandangos, and the "Luigi" of Bocce placed third.
Crazy Horse's jockey Trey was the only jockey to pull his horse rather than push it.
Six heats narrowed the field of contenders.
Thirty-three groomed sawhorses were created and adorned for the most fleeting two minutes in Old Town racing.
"Sound Hound," created by Frank Bourne at Decibels Custom Audio Video, was judged the Best of Show at the colorful Bootleggers Ball Friday night.
The upside to the beastly hot race day is that there was not the usual mud on the track.
Race day activities also included a Fine Arts and Vintage Fair and a horseshoe tournament.

The gala event benefited the Cottonwood Equine Therapy program. Raffle tickets to win a 1980 Jeep CJ5 can still be purchased for $10 each at Oxendale Service and Burning Tree Cellars.
