Treakle body identified; death called homicide
Jamie Treakle Montiel
Jamie Treakle Montiel

On Sept. 2, the Yavapai County Medical Examiner confirmed the identity of a body found near Cherry Creek Road as that of Jamie Treakle Montiel of Cottonwood.

Her death is classified as a homicide, according to the Camp Verde Marshal's Office.

Detectives are asking for the public's help in solving this crime, believed to have occurred sometime after Aug. 16, after Treakle went missing.

The suspect may have walked away from the scene, headed in the direction of Cottonwood from Cherry Creek Road in Camp Verde. The area is labeled in the hunting regulations as Unit 19A. It includes Cherry Creek Road to the intersection of Forest Service Road 361 and the area immediately west.

Detectives are asking members of the public who may have deployed game cameras or hunting cameras in the area during that time frame of Aug. 14-Aug. 29 to contact the CVMO at (928) 567-6621.

Treakle disappeared Aug. 17 around 12:55 p.m. after being released from the Yavapai County Detention Center in Camp Verde, where she had been on a charge of failure to pay fines. Her family became concerned when Jamie failed to make contact with her children after that weekend. According to reports, she had called her boyfriend for a ride from the facility and then called her estranged husband. When the boyfriend arrived to pick her up, Jamie was not there.

A search was called not only for Jamie but also for a black pickup truck that reportedly belonged to the estranged husband, Joseph Montiel. He had also been incarcerated on a charge of assaulting Jamie but was temporarily out of jail Aug. 17 to take care of a medical issue.

Wednesday, Jamie's father, James Treakle, found the black truck in a ravine off of Cherry Road. Thursday, a wider search of the area around the truck uncovered the body.

First it was a tragedy. The words written in this article are enough to get a new venue. Be careful what you write. The same is true with the idiots that post on facebook.
It will be used as evidence and you will be called to testify.
His lawyer will refer to public statements concerning his guilt.
A neice of mine got on Facebook and spoke
her mind about her cheating husband. She
followed up with more tyrantic rage and now
may loose custody of her kids because she
chose to put him on trial for all to see.Her statements could be grounds to lable her an
unfit mother. Lawyers suck but are a necessary
evil.
Pray for the family

Really? Why worry about spelling? who really cares if he graduated or not? He's very angry and hurt by a senseless tragedy! But really is it so hard to have a little compassion and take a lady home that may belong to your community and has children that need her?? Is is that hard to extend a hand to a PERSON that may need a lift or even a bus pass.something.seems like a bunch of boys on a power trip to me. I was there I saw it with my own eyes. I saw sherriffs chatting each other up while a young woman was missing in the mountains of mingus and no one seemed to care. hmmm if it was your daughter how would you feel?hooray for CV Ad any other agencies that may or may NOT been involved.Hope that never happens to anyone else!

Bond, you are a piece of work. The death of this girl is very sad. It has nothing to do with politics, the GOP or abortion. You will use anything to push your agenda.

I was Joey montiel 1st wife. I lived in fear of my life. My son afraid of Joey. He beat up my dad for no reason. I left cottonwood to get away. My son almost shot Joey to protect me. He stalked me, chased me. My prayers go out to her kids and family.

Tell me. Did you graduate from 8th grade and do you vote? If so, you and Bond must be of the same party, right?

Article comment by: Ask the retired CVMO

An you may ask why the mass exits occurred at CVMO? Maybe because they knew more than the Marshal? Maybe they were incompetant? I tend to agree with the first statement that they knew more than she does. Some of those that left had over 20 years.

This is tragedy and I agree that the police cannot be everywhere at once and protect every person every minute of the day. As taxpayers all we can realistically ask is Justice is done. However, if this is true the detective was on light duty then my question is: Marshal Gardner, what are you thinking?

I don't see how this is CVMO's or the county's fault (neither of which I care for at all, in fact the SO is pretty backwards in most cases). The jail did not call her estranged husband, nor did CVMO. No one MADE her go with him, if in fact he is the guilty one. Police agencies are not these all seeing, all knowing entities that can always be there BEFORE trouble happens but always out of your way while you want to go 30-40 over down HWY 260. This is surely a tragedy but lets focus our anger on the one(s) responsible: the killer. They are the only person(s) at fault.

This is right,,She didn't have a ride, she also was a victime of domestic violence but she was also been release from Jail. This is the point the Yavapai county sheriff office and cvmo dont care, let me explain. why? because she was in jail so to then she was a no good person dont matter she was a daughter a mother or the woman at the year for one simple reason she was release from jail to CVMO she was a criminal not worth looking for, the family needs to find out who is the detective incharge of the investigation because to my underatndind this detective incharge was is not even allowed to leave his office this detective is on light duty and you telling me the chief gave him this case, well now if this is true now you know why CVMO never went out looking for Jaime the detective incharge sit at his desk waiting for a phone call to tell him where to go find her. CVMO needs to go down the chief needs to get fired we need people to be a leaders ... Nancy Garner dont know how to to investigation or how to handle good investigation, the Detective incharge of jaime case needs to be charge for failing to find her and not doing his job, CANT you people tell how angry i am.

Jamie Treakle Montiel was one of my close dearest friends for the last years. when I found out she was missing I knew in my heart something terrible must had to happen because is not like her to Just dissappear and not to call her family. But I had some hope that Law Enforcement would do more to find her sooner I cant Believe her father had to find her this is B.S people we pay their Salary and they cant even protect out citizens I hope the truth comes out about this poor investigation I think the Family should call Nancy Grace or CNN news about this poor investigation done by the Camp Verde Marshal's Office I dont see how the DETECTIVE in charge of this case just didn't do nothing to find my friend I think we all the citizens of the Verde Valley should get together and have the CHIEF of POLICE for CVMO speak up and explain why her and the wortless DETECTIVE didnt do nothing to find my friend. Also investigate this DETECTIVE to see if he was even capable of taking on a case like this, CVMO the Rodeo clowns should be sued and the chief should be so ashamed of her self that she needs to resign. sorry Nancy Garner you have prooven that you not capable of protecting our cittizens you need to go maybe you and the detective in charge of the investigation can leave ASAP we dont need you we the citizens can take care of our own its a proven fact in this case. PLEASE POST THIS ON MY BEHALF BEST FRIEND JAMIE AND HER FAMILY

The loss of any human life is a tragedy.

We have devalued life in America with the neoconservative emphasis upon materialism to the point where human life itself has been devalued.

What a tragedy.

This reminds me of the GOP abortion position. They want to force women to give birth BUT they want to do absolutely nothing to protect the child AFTER it is born.

My heartfelt condolences to the family of this woman. A genuine tragedy.

Let's see if I get this straight... she didn't have a ride or a car which is why she called 2 people including her husband that just got out for assaulting her.... yet her husband's truck magically shows up while he's temporarily out of jail. THEN he shows up covered in scratches from brush, as reported previously... and we're looking for "someone"? I am sooooo angry right now.
