Buddy the pit bull died being found apparently shot twice on ATV trail off Old Highway 279.

VERDE VILLAGE -- The Cottonwood Police Department is looking for anyone with information on the owner of a dog that was found shot. Dec. 30, an adult white male pit bull with black freckled ears, affectionately known as "Buddy," was found on an off-road ATV trail on Old Highway 279 about three-quarters of a mile south of the intersection of Ogden Ranch Road.

A passerby initially found the dog sitting motionless near a bush. But, on further inspection, the passerby realized the animal was injured. The dog was still alive after receiving what were believed to be two gunshot wounds to his head. The passerby transported Buddy to a nearby veterinarian hospital for treatment. He was stabilized through the weekend but did not survive his injuries.

"Buddy was found wearing a harness, which leads us to believe this animal has an owner," said Cottonwood Police Department spokesman Sgt. Gareth Braxton. "We need an owner to come forward to claim him and to help provide a clearer understanding of what might have taken place. At this point, we have a lot of questions we need answered," he went on to say.

Anyone with information on Buddy or his owner is asked to contact the Cottonwood Police Department or Yavapai County Silent Witness.

If this was an act of hatred and cruelty toward the pit breed shame on you. I have a pit and I can't imagine this happening to her, I never imagined having a pit because I was scared of them because of all the negativity I heard. She was a puppy when I saw her, I adopted her! She is the joy in my family's lives. I understand the breed because I opened up my mind and heart. I could say more but this is about precious Buddy. My tears drop for you sweetie. I hope you get justice soon and if you don't haunt the basterd!

The person who did this probably abuses people, too. I doubt the guilty party will turn himself in. If anybody even recognizes the dog, they should come forward. Perhaps they have info that could lead to the murderer. Karma will get the one who did this.

This situation is sickening. We had to have 2 of our beloved dogs euthenized during the past year because of illness and old age and I understand there comes a time when that is the most humane thing to do but if this was someones old fashion, wild west way of getting rid of their dog...well I'm not sure I can really voice my opinion here in the language I'd like to use. Shame on whoever did this.

Bravo to those who tried to rescue him. I would have done the same
