Bikers down in Clarkdale

CLARKDALE - Two motorcycle riders were hospitalized after their bike failed to negotiate the roundabout at Centerville and State Route 89A Monday just after 4 p.m.

The bike struck the yield sign as the bike was entering the roundabout.

Joe Moore, chief of the Clarkdale Fire District, says the 38-year-old woman passenger was unconscious when crews arrived.

She was loaded onto the Verde Valley Ambulance and taken to the hospital helipad to be flown to the Flagstaff trauma center. The man who was driving was treated at Verde Valley Medical Center.

The bike itself suffered significant damage.

Porch on fire in Jerome

JEROME - The cause is undetermined, but a tourist spotted a fire burning on the second story porch of a structure on Queen Street near Jerome's Sliding Jail Sunday evening. The visitor told a local who called the fire district.

Fire crews knocked down the small fire within minutes and the structure was saved. The building has an art gallery on the ground floor and a residence upstairs.

The fire burned a small 2-by-2-foot section of the wooden porch and potting material. Fire Chief Rusty Blair said no one was at home at the time the fire broke out, though department officials do not consider the fire suspicious.

Fireworks not allowed

JEROME -- Jerome firefighters warned a man that ignition of any fireworks is illegal in Jerome. He was not cited for the first violation.

Even though limited sparklers and novelty fireworks are permitted in Arizona, many local municipalities in Northern Arizona and the Verde Valley have banned the displays.

Fire Chief Rusty Blair said he looked outside when the clock struck the New Year and saw sky rockets launched from a local house.

The resident complained that they are legal in Arizona. "Not the ones you are using," Blair said.

Full-fledged rockets are prohibited everywhere in Arizona.

All fireworks are prohibited in Jerome and other Verde Valley cities and towns.

Blair says many people still have a misconception about the fireworks law in Arizona.

Dirt road rollover

CORNVILLE -- A car failed to negotiate the intersection at Oak Creek Valley and Merritt Ranch Roads and rolled over. Verde Valley Fire crews were called.

Of the occupants in the vehicle, one was transported to Verde Valley Medical Center with minor injuries.
