In support of the City of Cottonwood's efforts to promote economic development and tourism for Cottonwood, the Old Town Association is sponsoring its first "Bootlegger's Day" in the city's historic Old Town District.

It will be held on Thursday, Oct. 23, 4-6 p.m.

The Old Town Association has planned for an afternoon of events to draw area visitors and local residents to the city's historic core for introducing and supporting local business and to just have some good fun.

Earlier in the day, Old Town Association and merchants will welcome a contingency of Arizona tourism directors who will be visiting locations in the Verde Valley.

In recognition of Cottonwood's historic claim to fame for being the center of bootlegging during Prohibition in Arizona, those who are interested in participating are invited to wear 1920s period costumes to add character to the afternoon.

Maps of all merchant locations will be available along with special brochures that provide the history of each building on North Main Street, ideal for a self-guided historic walking tour of Old Town.

Maps and brochures will be available at the Old Town Jail located at 1101 N. Main St.

The jail will also be the site for photographs to be taken for those who wish to experience "an arrest." A small fee will apply for photographs.

Merchant businesses will remain open to 6 p.m.

Shopping in Old Town ranges from clothing, home furnishings and home décor, Christmas decorations, gifts, books, beading and yarns, custom and fashion jewelry, unique import items, antiques and more.

Following the afternoon activities, all are encouraged to stay for an evening meal. Restaurants in Old Town offer American, Italian, Mexican, Thai and European style cuisine, and not to forget the bakeries and ice cream parlor for dessert.

Activities will also feature a Car Cruise and all interested persons with vintage cars or vehicles of pride are invited to attend and mingle with the public. Special parking will be made available to those participating.

Local musicians will provide music as part of the afternoon entertainment.
