Man assaulted with 'machete'

COTTONWOOD - Yavapai County Sheriff's deputies were sent to East Silver Leaf Trail in Verde Village Wednesday night, where they found a 21-year-old man with a serious head injury, covered in blood.

EMS personnel treated the victim, who told authorities that 48-year-old Randy Stewart assaulted him with a "machete" after he refused to buy Stewart's vehicle.

Stewart allegedly struck the victim on the back of his head, arm and hand. The bloody man barricaded himself in another room in the suspect's home while Stewart fled.

Deputies got information from two witnesses who were home but initially asleep at the time of the attack.

Within a short time, deputies located and stopped Stewart driving his white Ford F-150 pickup along State Route 260 near Cherry Road.

Police said there was blood on Stewart's clothing and inside his vehicle. The knife was also located and contained blood evidence.

Stewart initially refused to discuss the incident and was placed under arrest for aggravated assault and disorderly conduct. He remains in custody on a $35,000 bond in the Camp Verde Jail.

The victim was treated at Verde Valley Medical Center. Although his injuries were not life threatening, the cut to his scalp was serious and took about 45 minutes for medical staff to treat and close the wound. Detectives noted defensive wounds on the man.

Stewart later admitted that he had assaulted the victim for reasons beyond a dispute over property, but would not elaborate.

@ Good thing Stewart didn't Have a gun
Not necessarily. At that range, a machete is more lethal than most handguns.

I totally agree. Something is seriously broken in the Verde Valley when communities can afford to float tens of millions in bonds for recreation centers, showpiece civic projects, and state-of-the-art school renovations, but citizens who know they have a problem and seek help are turned away for lack of adequate crisis facilities.

I'd like to know VVMC and the Guidance Clinic's side of this particular case. But there's no doubt our local civic leaders have a bad case of misplaced priorities.

My heart goes out to both family's! This is also not the kind natured man I know. Good people get sick, good people need help that the system failed to give him. The young man who was attacked was kind and did not deserve this! No one does. There are no words to express my heartbreak for all involved.

I have known this man for over 20 years. He was the best man at my first wedding. This is definitely not the person I know and love. Before you pass judgement know the situation. He is a sick man. He and his wife were begging for help and I can not express how disappointed I am with our system. Who knows how different this family's life could have been if only he could have gotten the help he so desperately needed? I don't condone what he did, but my sympathies lie with all of the victims, and Randy is a victim of our system.

thank you for your last comment barber he was very proud of his hair. This mans health was failing him and we seeked help from verde valley medical center and the guidance clinic. They failed to help him but he is fully resposible for his actions and the young man he assaulted is one of the most respectable young men I know . they both have to pay for the failure of verde valley medical center and the guidance clinic and a serious investigation needs to be conducted to prevent this from happening again

I have known Randy Stewart for several years. He comes in the shop where I work once a month. As a barber in Cottonwood, I'm afforded the opportunity to talk one on one with many of the towns residents. Randy is one the nicest and most sincere guys I've met. The article that I just read is very disturbing. It is definitely not the Randy Stewart I know.
