School districts drum up override support

Voters will consider in November overrides that could mean millions in funding for the Cottonwood-Oak Creek and Mingus Union High School districts.

Override committee Partners in Education and the districts' superintendents have been giving presentations to community groups. Though the overrides passed by close margins the last time around, COCSD Superintendent Barbara U'Ren told the board Tuesday night that the information sessions have been well received.

MUHS Superintendent Paul Tighe and U'Ren will be speaking on local radio, and have drafted informational flyers that will go out in the city's water bills one zone at a time.

Teachers will be offering fact sheets and voter registration forms at parent-teacher conferences.

"We provide the facts and that's all we provide," U'Ren said.

Board President Jason Finger said one of the negative criticisms of the override has been that the two districts need to unify to save money.

"That's great, but that's not what the discussion is about right now," Finger said. "It's scary to think of (voters) punishing the district."

U'Ren said this issue was brought up during one of the PIE and superintendent presentations.

"It's been a conversation for 50 years," she said. "The two districts are sharing quite a few things. We are always looking for those ways to create greater efficiencies."

During the portion of the board meeting set aside for a shared services update, U'Ren said the main focus has been on the overrides, as well as coordinating school visits between MUHS and COCSD.

Please educate yourself about this issue.

When you say there is "no money" you are being misled.

If there is "no money" then why do you think they spend so much of it on stuff like PR consultants and travel for school board members to vacation destinations?

Did you know Barb U'Ren makes more money than the governor of Arizona?

Yet Camp Verde seems just fine with no superintendent at all.

Do you think they'll miraculously start wasting less of our money if we give them more of it?

Please do not deceive yourself.

We must do what's best overall. Voting no is short term pain, but long term gain when we get better management of the district then we have now.

And there is no better way to ensure positive change than by voting no on this override.

Get your children OFF the video games and take them to a park for PE. Teach them to play a musical instrument. Join IN with your children and go to a arts and crafts store, then just do not hand them the bag of goodies... sit down with them and do arts crafts, TOGETHER. Most parents these days expect someone else to do for thier kids.

This is why I'm voting for the override: I would like my children & all the Cottonwood students to have PE, Music and Art classes. Without the override, there are no funds for this, since the state does not provide money for these classes. I also would like my children & all the Cottonwood students to have enrichment programs, like the Advanced Learner program as an example. The override funds this as well. Please educate yourself about this issue - visit the schools, talk to parents, talk to our teachers. Please vote for this & help our community's children.

Article comment by: Just Vote No

We all have the personal option, by mail, of just voting NO on the overrides. What they, the school Admin are not telling us, is what will we lose?
All I have seen are emotional pleas and some feel good PR. Convince me I should vote yes with my hard earned dollars. I don't have kids in the district, but I do care about their future employ-ability. Football doesn't make someone employable. Theatre will only help a very few, very talented.
What are the schools doing to ensure our future adults are not just raising government supported kids?

Hopefully, they will stay in AZ, but even if they don't, we need to get them out of the government's pocket, into good paying careers somewhere in this country, and do it with the small amount of money this area has to offer.
Vote NO until the districts get their priorities straight.

Josh,

I actually spoke with the Dennis Prager folks and they confirmed the story.

Let's say you're correct but if the story was correct would you support this High School Principle?

I will research your claim further and if you're correct, thanks for pointing it out.

Can anyone explain why Mingus High School planted all of the grass in the front entry of the school?

Doesn't this grass require costly up keep and water?

Water, what are we teaching our students about water conservation?

All of the little expenses and up to big expenses don't they?

Story from the Dennis Prager Show
Subject: The Old Way
ISN'T THIS THE WAY IT WAS DONE IN OUR SCHOOLS?
Subject: New High School Principal in Colorado!

This is really good!!!!!

New High School Principal in Colorado!

America has lost its decency, manners, politeness and soon, without quick changes, character!

Listen to the young people, F-this, F-that, and nary anyone will step up and correct them- even with wife and kids in tow!
FINALLY - - Someone in the teaching profession had the courage to set the standards so badly needed NOW.

PLEASE, MAKE THE TIME TO READ THIS and SHARE IT....PLEASE.

New high school principal

We watched high school principal Dennis Prager of Colorado , along with Sara Palin and Tom Brokaw on TV a couple of weeks ago....what a dynamic, down to earth speaker. Even though Palin and Brokaw were also guest speakers, they did little but nod and agree with him. This is the guy that should have been running for President in 2012!

A Speech Every American High School Principal Should Give. Dennis Prager:

"To the students and faculty of our high school:

"I am your new principal, and honored to be so. There is no greater calling than to teach young people.

"I would like to apprise you of some important changes coming to our school. I am making these changes because I am convinced that most of the ideas that have dominated public education in America have worked against you, against your teachers and against our country.

"First, this school will no longer honor race or ethnicity. I could not care less if your racial makeup is black, brown, red, yellow or white. I could not care less if your origins are African, Latin American, Asian or European or if your ancestors arrived here on the Mayflower or on slave ships. The only identity I care about, the only one this school will recognize, is your individual identity -- your character, your scholarship, your humanity. And the only national identity this school will care about is American.

"This is an American public school, and American public schools were created to make better Americans. If you wish to affirm an ethnic, racial or religious identity through school, you will have to go elsewhere. We will end all ethnicity, race and non-American nationality-based celebrations. They undermine the motto of America , one of its three central values -- epluribus Unum, "from many, one." And this school will be guided by America 's values. This includes all after-school clubs. I will not authorize clubs that divide students based on any identities. This includes race, language, religion, sexual orientation or whatever else may become in vogue in a society divided by political correctness.

"Your clubs will be based on interests and passions, not blood,> ethnic, racial or other physically defined ties. Those clubs just cultivate narcissism -- an unhealthy preoccupation with the self -- while the purpose of education is to get you to think beyond yourself. So we will have clubs that transport you to the wonders and glories of art, music, astronomy, languages you do not already speak, carpentry and more. If the only extracurricular activities you can imagine being interested in are those based on ethnic, racial or sexual identity, that means that little outside of yourself really interests you.

"Second , I am uninterested in whether English is your native language. My only interest in terms of language is that you leave this school speaking and writing English as fluently as possible. The English language has united America 's citizens for over 200 years, and it will unite us at this school. It is one of the indispensable reasons this country of immigrants has always come to be one country. And if you leave this school without excellent English language skills, I would be remiss in my duty to ensure that you will be prepared to successfully compete in the American job market. We will learn other languages here -- it is deplorable that most Americans only speak English -- but if you want classes taught in your native language rather than in English, this is not your school.

"Third , because I regard learning as a sacred endeavor, everything in this school will reflect learning's elevated status. This means, among other things, that you and your teachers will dress accordingly. Many people in our society dress more formally for Hollywood events than for church or school. These people have their priorities backward. Therefore, there will be a formal dress code at this school.

"Fourth, no obscene language will be tolerated anywhere on this school's property -- whether in class, in the hallways or at athletic events. If you can't speak without using the F-word, you can't speak. By obscene language I mean the words banned by the Federal Communications Commission, plus epithets such as "Nigger," even when used by one black student to address another black, or "bitch," even when addressed by a girl to a girlfriend. It is my intent that by the time you leave this school, you will be among the few your age to instinctively distinguish between the elevated and the degraded, the holy and the obscene.

"Fifth, we will end all self-esteem programs. In this school, self-esteem will be attained in only one way -- the way people attained it until decided otherwise a generation ago -- by earning it. One immediate consequence is that there will be one valedictorian, not eight.

"Sixth, and last, I am reorienting the school toward academics and away from politics and propaganda. No more time will be devoted to scaring you about smoking and caffeine, or terrifying you about sexual harassment or global warming. No more semesters will be devoted to condom wearing and teaching you to regard sexual relations as only or primarily a health issue... There will be no more attempts to convince you that you are a victim because you are not white, or not male, or not heterosexual or not Christian. We will have failed if any one of you graduates this school and does not consider him or herself inordinately fortunate -- to be alive and to be an American.

"Now, please stand and join me in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of our country. As many of you do not know the words, your teachers will hand them out to you."

Fund raising idea that have proven to work, will it work for school programs?

Yavapai county businesses have been generously participating in the effort for two years because they actually see the value in it!

***********************************************

“America the Beautiful & BagReadyJobs”

As proud American’s, will we honor our Armed Forces, veterans and communities by participating in the “America the Beautiful and BagReadyJobs” Adopt-A-Highway effort?

This is how “America the Beautiful & BagReadyJobs” will be used as a learning and earning opportunity for our nation’s youth groups. “BagReadyJobs” is funded by community businesses and residents.

Youth groups will learn how to build their marketing, sales, service performance a service and billing service skills. They will also be paid for their work. Youth groups will negotiate fees with their local businesses and residents for cleaning up the litter on the highway and filling 33 gallon bags. The youth groups will work with their local Adopt-a-Highway groups and assist them in their efforts to restore our country to “America the Beautiful”.

The businesses and residents that pledge the youth groups will negotiate between $7 and 10 for every 33 gallon bag of trash they fill to the brim.

The nation’s official Adopt-A-Highway group leaders will document the participation of the youth groups and the number of bags they filled. The youth groups will provide a copy of the Adopt-A-Highway group leader’s confirmation to their funding sponsors.

In addition to displaying the trash-filled bags on the highway for 4 days as part of creating an awareness and education opportunity, the youth groups are required to write a 500 word essay that addresses the following questions. They must provide a copy of their essays to those funding their activities plus their local news media organizations.

The essay questions are:
1) What did you learn?
2) What solutions might reverse the occurrence of highway litter and recycling efforts?
3) How does highway litter impact the economy of your community?
4) In addition to the negative economic effects, how does highway litter reflect on the residents?
5) What will you do to do to make a difference?

Those providing funding will pay the youth groups for their services once all these obligations have been fulfilled.

“America the Beautiful and BagReadyJobs” litter events are being promoted nationwide on the third Saturday of February, May, August and November. Many Adopt-A-Highway groups select random dates for their cleanup activities. Our goal is to connect the Adopt-A-Highway groups needing help and youth groups wanting to help through local media organizations. Folksville USA would love to get these stories so that we may broadcast them far and wide.

“America the Beautiful and BagReadyJobs” is the perfect opportunity for city and town leaders to challenge their community businesses and residents to support local youth groups that want to earn their funding. These young adults are our future role models and leaders. Recycling activities and getting some exercise are additional benefits that can be realized through this effort.

Since 2012, I have traveled more than 14,000 miles throughout the United States and businesses plus individuals have thanked me for providing this opportunity that results in a win-win outcome for their community. Mingus has done a good job with their money...NOT. How much was spent on the new sports complex that is locked so the community can't use it. Then they buy busses which they could have purchased with the bond monies they spent on the sports complex. Now they want more monies in the override, have they really spent the tax payers money in a responsible manner? Those are questions that should be answered before I get my ballot in the mail and I cast my vote.
Good luck!

Article comment by: Voting NO!! !!

Don't have enough money, just do an override. Wish I could do this when I am not responsible w/ my funds and my expenses become more than my income. This is getting rediculous. What makes me even more upset, is these districts get my property tax $'s even though my children go to Clarkdale Jerome School, and I live in Clarkdale. The cottonwood school district refuses to vote to give Clarkdale back its city limits for Clarkdale's students-as the map was drawn years ago before alot of the Clarkdale area was built. Cottonwood will not come pick up my kids w/ a bus, but still get my tax $.

I will not even consider voting for an override if the board even entertains the idea of sponsoring sports at a charter school after what they put Cornville through.

Article comment by: Can't Vote Yes Yet

I still have questions concerning this override vote. It is a money vote, so I want to know where the money goes, and what gets dumped if we don't pay.
I also want to know if the vote includes both school districts or if Mingus and COCSD have separate votes? I think MUHS has done a good job of educating and budget management. I think COCSD has done neither.
I'd vote for the MUHS override, but definitely no on COCSD.
If they go together, it is NO for both.
Perhaps there will be a public meeting for taxpayers with no children so we can learn what is really at stake and how the two districts work. It is assumed we all know all the ins and outs and I for one do not.
Convince me I should vote for this extra money instead of letting my bill drop a little.
