Crosses memorializing highway deaths now require approval
VERDE VALLEY - They've been a part of Arizona's landscape since roads were first traveled using four legs instead of four wheels - - especially by those of Hispanic and Native American descent. Now, ADOT is requiring pre-approval of the materials, placement and size of roadside memorials prior to placement.

IRS scams ongoing in Yavapai County
PRESCOTT - The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office is reissuing updated warnings about IRS tax scam calls due to a recent influx of reports within the past few days. Many employees of the Sheriff's Office are receiving the scam calls almost daily, according to a news release from YCSO.

COTTONWOOD - The Tavern Hotel at 904 N. Main St. is moving forward with the expansion project, now that it has gone through most of the permitting process, said owner Eric Jurisin. Jurisin said the expansion of 24 more rooms will make it a 40-room hotel that includes a cottage and a high-end spa.

PHOENIX -- The state transportation board will hold a special meeting and study session Tuesday in Phoenix. One of the action items before the board would increase the design budget for the 4-laning of SR 260. The proposed $423,000 hike for engineering support will increase the design budget from $4.949 million to$5.372 million dollars.

Cornville man arrested for burglary, disorderly conduct
CORNVILLE -- Louis Hernandez, of Cornville, was arrested around 11:45 p.m. Aug.16 for charges including burglary, resisting arrest, criminal damage, disorderly conduct, and theft. The 23-year-old was booked at the Camp Verde Detention Center and remains in custody on probation hold without bond, according to a news release from the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office.

Cottonwood to save more than $1.5 million by refinancing debt
COTTONWOOD -- The Cottonwood City Council in mid-July approved a loan to refinance its 2007-GADA bonds at an interest rate that will save taxpayers nearly $1.5 million. The bond rating service, Standard and Poor's has given the new bond series an "AA-" rating. As defined by S&P: "An obligation rated 'AA' differs from the highest-rated obligations only to a small degree. The obligor's capacity to meet its financial commitment on the obligation is very strong."
