Kenneth Birchett, Jr., a 51-year-old Cottonwood man, was sentenced to 30 years in the Arizona Department of Corrections last week by Yavapai County Superior Court Judge Michael Bluff.

Nicholas Reid expected to plead to home invasion, car burglaries
CAMP VERDE -- 25-year-old Nicholas Reid, one of two men facing charges in the 18 Street Cottonwood home invasion and shooting in 2013, is now facing charges for vehicle burglary in a Camp Verde case. DNA testing from the burglary returned identifying Reid as the suspect.

Northern Arizona Boys & Girls Club finally dissolves
COTTONWOOD -- The Cottonwood-based Boys & Girls Club of Northern Arizona will end operations effective immediately, according to Barbara Stricker, Operations Manager of the Pacific Region of the national after-school organization.  

"Like other non-profits, the Club has experienced increased demand for services due to challenging economic conditions at the national, state and local levels. At the same time, these conditions have also resulted in reductions in charitable giving and grant availability. The board regrets having to make this very difficult decision," said Stricker.

Judge: Jack Rider jury will hear two differing causes of death
CAMP VERDE -- The defense of Jack Rider has gotten more complicated. Wednesday, attorney John Sears brought Mark Fischione to the stand in an attempt to have the current Yavapai County Medical Examiner excluded as an expert witness. Sears says it will "confuse and prejudice the jury" to have two forensic experts ruling the manner of death differently.

ICE partners with sheriff for multiple arrests in Yavapai County
Officers with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations Team made multiple arrests in several areas of Yavapai County, during the week of July 28. Those arrested were transported to the Yavapai County Jail in Camp Verde for processing and holding for transportation to a Federal Holding facility. The YCSO Camp Verde facility is designated a 287(g) facility in partnership with ICE.

Those personal connections would help strengthen people's understanding and desire for stewardship of this precious resource.

City prepares for annual water/wastewater rate adjustment
COTTONWOOD -- A work session of the Cottonwood City Council Tuesday prepared the board for a proposed cost adjustment for water and wastewater rates. It was not a formal hearing, but Administrative Services General Manager Rudy Rodriguez told the small audience that there would be two formal public hearings before the council takes action.

There was a lot of information, a lot of clarification, but the meeting may not satisfy objectors, including the Citizens 4 Fiscal Accountability, which has attempted to build opposition to the adjustment.

COTTONWOOD -- A month from opening, THAT Brewery owners Tamara and Steve Morken have slowly worked an empty Cottonwood warehouse into a rustic bar and restaurant.

The brewery's new production facility serves as the backdrop for this second location, in what Tamara said creates an industrial feel.

Cottonwood OK's $86 million spending plan
The Cottonwood City Council has adopted its final budget for fiscal year 2015 Tuesday. Two public comments, including one from former Verde Valley Property Owners Association President Margaret Paddock, focused on water rates. They were advised that water rate increases were not a part of the budget, but that a future work session -- possibly next Tuesday -- would address those matters.
