Juvenile steals car from Cottonwood Wal-Mart parking lot

COTTONWOOD -- Cottonwood Police were dispatched Wednesday to a report of a stolen car from the Wal-Mart parking lot. An employee had parked her vehicle earlier in that day. When she left for home she found the car had been stolen.

Video surveillance of the area where the vehicle was parked showed two young men approached the vehicle, get inside, and leave the parking lot. The victim stated she had the only key to the car and did not know how someone would have been able to take it.

At about 10:30 that night, officers were called to the Home Depot parking lot, where they were told the stolen vehicle was located. When officers arrived, they could see a young man lying down in the front seats as if trying to avoid being seen. The subject, a 15-year-old male, was removed from the vehicle and questioned about the vehicle. The juvenile stated he had stolen the car from the Wal-Mart parking lot using a key he already had from a similar type vehicle. The teen said he was with another subject but refused to identify the second person.

During the investigation it was further discovered the 15 year old had a felony warrant out of Yavapai County for escape. Drug paraphernalia was also located in the car, which the juvenile allegedly stated was his. The 15 year old was transported to the Juvenile Detention Center in Prescott and charged with the theft of the vehicle, possession of drug paraphernalia, and the warrant. The juvenile further reported he had spray painted the hood of the vehicle black in an effort to conceal it better from the police.

The investigation continues to determine the identity of the second teen that got into the passenger side of the vehicle at the time it was stolen.

The vehicle was not found the same night it was stolen. It was found the following night in the Home Depot parking lot because it was seen by a friend of the car owner.
