Verde Valley Leadership Class plans Legacy project

COTTONWOOD -- Verde Valley Leadership is proud to announce the Legacy Project for Class VII was approved by Cottonwood City Council on April 1, and is now looking for donations to complete the project.

Class VII of the Verde Valley Leadership plans to place a sailcloth shade structure over the new children's playground at Riverfront Park. The new equipment was built late last year and while it is mostly plastic, during the summer months it gets very hot and a shade structure will make it useable throughout the year.

The "Legacy Project" is a part of the two-year long leadership program that strives to build and fortify leadership in the Verde Valley. Along with advising students in the current class and participating in other programs, the Legacy Project portion of the second year helps students contribute something lasting to the community- building a legacy. Class VII has been researching potential projects for several months and recently decided on the shade structure for Riverfront Park.

Class member Todd Conaway noted, "A shade structure will provide needed relief from the direct sun and welcome shade for several months each year.  We feel this is a worthy project because it will offer protection from the Arizona sun for our most vulnerable population, young children under five."

The plans for the shade were completed and presented to the Cottonwood Planning and Zoning Code Review last month and were passed after small revisions. The project was approved by the City Council on April 1.

The group hopes to have the shade in place by the start of June. The project will be funded through community donations. Tax-deductible donations by check or credit card for the shade structure can be made by visiting www.vvleadership.org or by emailing info@vvleadership.org. Please use the above email address to find out about offering in-kind donations for the project.

The mission of the non-profit Verde Valley leadership program is to enhance personal and professional growth opportunities through development of leadership skills, community awareness and diverse, influential networks. Applications are now being accepted online for the next Class. For more information or to apply, please visit www.vvleadership.org
