VVMC earns 'A' grade for patient safety, quality of care

Verde Valley Medical Center was honored with its third "A" grade in a row in the Fall 2013 update to the Hospital Safety Score, which rates how well hospitals protect patients from accidents, errors, injuries and infections.

The score is compiled under the guidance of the nation's leading experts on patient safety and is administered by The Leapfrog Group, an independent industry watchdog. VVMC has been recognized with an "A" grade three times in a row for its demonstrated commitment to the health of its patients through safety, quality of care and positive patient outcomes.

The Leapfrog Group is a nationally recognized, nonprofit organization that reviews and analyzes hospital information in order to provide hospitals a letter grade for safety each year. In June, Leapfrog graded 2,514 U.S. hospitals nationwide; VVMC was one of only 780 hospitals to earn an "A" grade.

"Earning an 'A' grade is an achievement in and of itself, but continuing to achieve patient safety excellence is a true accomplishment and the ultimate goal. For three grading periods in a row, VVMC's dedicated staff and physicians have shown our hospital is one of the safest in the U.S.," said Barbara Dember, M.H.A., F.A.C.H.E., VVMC president and CEO.

In addition to receiving national recognition by the Leapfrog Group, VVMC has received other notable rankings and awards including:

• Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Awards. VVMC is ranked in the top 5 percent of hospitals in the U.S. by Healthgrades. This is the 5th year in a row VVMC has been recognized by Healthgrades for patient safety excellence. VVMC is one of 21 hospitals in the U.S. to have won this award five years in a row. Additionally, Healthgrades recognized VVMC's Joint Replacement Program, including knee replacement, hip replacement and hip fracture programs with 5-Star awards, as well as a 5-Star award for carotid vascular surgery.

• American Hospital Association presentation in Washington, D.C. In January 2013, VVMC was one of two hospitals chosen by the AHA to present at a national meeting. We were invited because of our demonstrated success and commitment to the health of patients as evidenced by our safety and quality metrics and our positive patient outcomes.

• Professional Research Consultants. VVMC has earned platinum, gold, silver, 5-star and 4-star awards for 12 consecutive years for customer service and quality of care. In 2013, VVMC received 13 awards. EntireCare Outpatient Therapy earned the Platinum Achievement Award and both Environmental Services and Outpatient Surgical Services earned Gold Achievement Awards.

• Modern Healthcare. Northern Arizona Healthcare was ranked among the nation's top performing healthcare systems in the U.S., as reported in Modern Healthcare. The April 15 edition lists NAH in the top 20 percent of more than 325 healthcare systems and 2,200 member hospitals in a recent study by Truven Health Analytics. NAH joins 21 other small hospital systems from throughout the U.S. in the ranking. Only one other small hospital system in Arizona was recognized.

• American Heart Association. VVMC has achieved Get With The Guidelines gold and silver awards for multiple years in the areas of treating stroke, heart attack and congestive heart failure patients.

• Becker's Hospital Review. VVMC was named one of "100 Great Community Hospitals" in the U.S. in the June 2012 issue. VVMC was one of only three hospitals in Arizona to make the prestigious list.

• Amerinet Healthcare Achievement Awards. VVMC was one of only 10 hospitals in the U.S. to be recognized by Amerinet, and was a standout in the Quality/Patient Care Delivery category, winning two awards for reducing central line bloodstream infections implementing a "whole hospital" concept, creating Team VVMC.

• U.S. News and World Report. The publication named VVMC a high-performing regional hospital in their 2011-2012 list of best regional hospitals in the nation.

Since its beginning as a small outpatient clinic in 1939, VVMC has grown into a full-service, 99-bed, nonprofit hospital serving North Central Arizona. In addition to the Cottonwood campus, outpatient services are offered in Sedona, Village of Oak Creek, Camp Verde and Cottonwood. More than 800 professional and support staff are employed at VVMC; the medical staff is comprised of nearly 100 physicians representing 25 medical specialties.

VVMC is accredited by DNV Healthcare, the newest hospital accreditation organization deemed by Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services to accredit hospitals, and licensed by the State of Arizona. VVMC is governed by a voluntary board of directors comprised of local citizens representing their local communities. All revenue in excess of expenses is returned to the community in the form of improved facilities, new equipment and services, recruitment and retention, and health education programs.

VVMC is a member of Northern Arizona Healthcare, which provides healthcare services through Flagstaff Medical Center, Verde Valley Medical Center, Northern Arizona Homecare and Hospice, The Heart & Vascular Center of Northern Arizona, Cancer Centers of Northern Arizona Healthcare, Fit Kids of Arizona and Guardian Air. The system provides the only Level I Trauma Center and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit north of Phoenix.
